About Dehradun

Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand. The city is located at the foot of the Himalayan range and gets its name from the Doon valley. The word Dera translates to camp, and hence, the name Dehradun refers to The Camp in the Doon Valley. Considered the gateway to holy sites such as Rishikesh, Haridwar, and the hill stations of Nainital and Mussoorie, Dehradun is a popular tourist destination. Dehradunís past blurs the lines between history and mythology. The city is said to be ancient, where Lord Ram and his brother Laxman were said to have performed penance to become capable of killing the demon king of Lanka, Ravana. Historically, the place was a part of Ashokaís empire, near the end of the 3rd century BC. After the collapse of the Mauryan empire, the governance of this area changed hands several times. It was part of the Mughal empire between 1757-1770. Sometime later, the local Rohillas formed their empire in the region before it was taken over by the Gorkhas in 1815 and then the British. After independence, the region became a part of the Union of India. The presence of numerous boarding schools and prestigious colleges has made Dehradun the educational hub of Uttarakhand. With its abundance of waterfalls, natural springs, and caves, the place offers an unforgettable experience to visitors, particularly nature lovers. Dehradun offers a combination of unparalleled modern amenities and a picturesque landscape. Tourism contributes a lot to the economy of Dehradun and, subsequently, Uttarakhand. Holi, Makar Sankranti, Harela, Bhitauli, and Virasat are the most prominent festivals celebrated in Dehradun. When it comes to local cuisine, Dehradun offers a wide range of North Indian dishes, with some unique dishes like Kafuli. The traditional dress for women is a saree worn with a full-sleeved blouse and covered by a jacket called an Angra. Menís traditional wear includes Dhoti and Angarkha. Public transport in Dehradun includes tongas, buses, private cars, auto-rickshaws, and taxis.
