About Port Blair Airport

The Veer Savarkar International Airport or the Port Blair Airport (IATA Code: IXZ) is located to the south of Port Blair. It is 2 km south of the city and is operated as a civil enclave. Being a joint-use airport, the airport also shares facilities with the Indian Navy and INS Utkrosh. It serves as the main airport of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, connecting it with the rest of the country. In 2002, the Port Blair Airport was renamed after the renowned freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, who served 10 years of imprisonment at the Cellular Jail. The civilian terminal of the airport is managed by the Airports Authority of India. It has a single runway, which can accommodate only narrow-bodied aircraft, such as Boeing 737, Airbus A320, and Airbus A321. The airport passenger terminal supports 400 passengers at a time. There are no aerobridges at the airport and buses are used to transport passengers to the aircraft from the terminal. A new world-class terminal is on the way and it is expected to handle 1,200 domestic and international passengers at peak hours. The new terminal will also have 4 new aerobridges. Port Blair Airport is served by both regular and seasonal flights. The major aircraft that connect Port Blair with other cities include Air India, Indigo, SpiceJet, and Vistara. There are also plenty of facilities for both incoming and outgoing passengers. It has free trolleys, medical services, wheelchair services, eateries, arts and handicraft shops, and duty-free retail shops.

About Port Blair

Port Blair is the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory of India in the Bay of Bengal. It is considered the gateway to the pristine islands with so much to offer, in terms of scenic beauty and cultural heritage. The Japanese occupied the island during World War II, but it was reclaimed by the British later during the time of Lord Mountbatten. The British established Port Blair as a penal colony with the opening of the Cellular Jail in 1906. Many freedom fighters were imprisoned at the Cellular Jail by the erstwhile British rulers. Port Blair lies around 1,255 km from Kolkata, on the southeastern part of the Andaman sea coast. According to popular belief, Andaman derives its name from the mighty Hindu God, Hanuman. It is also believed that these islands used to be dense with forest and uninhibited once, and the first man to sail to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands was Marco Polo. Until the 18th century, it remained shrouded from the world. Although it was marked on the maps, it did not get recognition. In the 17th century, it was captured by the Marathas, who retained it until the British took over. Port Blair is now a highly popular tourist destination with beautiful sceneries, lovely beaches, museums, and abundant marine life. Plenty of shops, hotels, and restaurants have also come up over the years. It is not only the capital of the Andaman islands but also its largest town.

About Madurai

Madurai is an ancient and vibrant city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Formerly known as Madura, the city is built on the banks of the Vaigai River. It is also the third-largest city in Tamil Nadu in terms of population. Madurai is associated with a number of dynasties, dating back to the Pandyas when it served as the capital of the Pandya Kingdom (from the 4th to 11th century CE). Madurai rose in the political scenario after becoming the centre of the civil disobedience movement in the 1940s. Since then, it has retained its political influence. The Anai (elephant), Naga (snake), and Pasu (cow) enclose the city with the Meenakshi Amman Temple at the core. According to a legend, Madurai city was once a dense forest that went by the name of Kadambavanam. One day, King Kulasekara Pandya was informed by a farmer that he saw the King of the Gods Indra worshipping a Swayambhu under a Kadamba tree. Upon hearing this, King Kulasekara Pandya ordered the clearing of the entire forest and had a temple built around the self-created lingam. It is believed that Lord Shiva himself appeared on the day of the cityís naming ceremony. The city was named Madurai from the Tamil word mathuram which means sweetness, after a few drops of nectar from Lord Shivaís hair fell on the ground.
