About Madurai

Madurai, according to legend, was formerly a forest called Kadambavanam. A farmer once witnessed Indra (the god-king) worshipping a Swayambhu (self-created Lingam) under a Kadamba tree. He quickly informed King Kulasekara Pandya, who proceeded to clear the forest and construct a temple around the Lingam. Soon after, the city of Madurai ó derived from mathuram (sweet in taste) ó developed around the temple. Three hills ó Yanaimalai (elephant), Nagamalai (snake), and Pasumalai (cow) ó surround the city of Madurai. The city of Madurai is also famous for its jasmine ó known better here as malligai ó attracting tourists from all over the world, and is a major exporter of the flower to other Indian towns. This temple city and pilgrim town have enthralled visitors for years. Ancient history and culture permeate every nook, and magnificent temples made in the Dravidian architecture dominate the skyline. The city is also well connected by city buses operated by the government, besides minibuses, autorickshaws and taxis.
