Known as the "City of Dreams," Mumbai is the capital city of Maharashtra. It is a mega-city driven by wealth, power, fame, and glamour. However, it is a city with historical links, beaches, temples, wonderful British architecture, and a true galaxy of Bollywood stars. The seven islands that came to constitute Mumbai were home to fishing colonies communities. Many successive indigenous empires ruled over the islands for centuries. However, it was later seized by the Portuguese and then the British East India Company. During the mid-18th century, major road and rail construction took place in Bombay, transforming the city into a major seaport on the Arabian sea.In 1947, the city was incorporated into Bombay state following India'sIndia's independence. Later on, the Sanyukta Maharashtra movement led to the formation of a new Maharashtra State with Bombay as the capital. In 1996, the city was renamed Mumbai and emerged as India's commercial and entertainment capital during that short period. .
