About Lucknow

Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, is popular as the land of nawabs and kebabs. Situated on the banks of the Gomati River, this city got its name from Lakshman, the younger brother of Lord Ram, according to local lore. However, the Mughal prominence in India shaped the course of this city to be known for its exquisite Indo-Islamic architecture and Mughal cuisine. The city grew drastically, and in the early 21st century, it overtook Kanpur as the most populated city in the state. It is now the 12th most populous urban city in India. It was the seat of power for the Nawabs of the Awadh region to whom most of the city's heirlooms can be traced. They were ardent admirers of the arts, literature, architecture, music, and food. From remnants of colonial history to postcolonial museums, this hub of the Awadh region beautifully knits together the glory of a shimmering past and the lucidness of a modern city. Lucknowís Awadhi cuisine is famous for some trademark dishes across the country. Especially famous for kebabs and biryani, the food trail is a highlight of the tourism industry in the city. It is also popular for a form of embroidery work known as ëChikankarií. Lucknow has a subtropical climate, which results in hot summers and cold winters. Hence, the months from October to March are the best time to visit the city.
