The official name of the Bangalore Airport is Kempegowda International Airport (BLR). It is about 35 km from the city centre and takes about 35 minutes to reach. The airport consists of one terminal and only operates domestic flights. It is under the management of the Airport Authority of India (AAI). The airport is spread across 290 acres of land but only has one functional runway. The airport can handle 200 passengers at a time. Their airport was established back in the 1940s by the Princely state. After independence, the Government of Karnataka assumed control of the airport in 1947. The Indian Air Force operated flights from the airport. In 1985, a feeder service was run by Vayudoot (a regional airline). But in 1990, the airport was defunct due to low passenger rates.
