About Agartala

Agartala, also known as the 'land of hills and lakes,' is the second-largest city in North-East India after Guwahati. This city's name is derived from 'Agar,' a fragrant oil from the Agaru tree, and 'tala,' meaning storehouse. This capital city lies on the banks of river Howrah. The new capital Agartala was founded by Maharaja Krishna Kishore Manikya, who shifted his capital from 'Old Haveli' to 'New Haveli' (present Agartala) to deal with the Kuki invasions and improve communication with British Bengal. Agartala's history revolves around the Manikya dynasty, even though it was ruled by over 170 Hindu rulers and the Mughals in 1733. Agartala became a part of India after three years of independence in October 1949. There are two tribes in Agartala: the Tripuri and the Bengalis, who are the region's original settlers. They closely follow their traditions, and hence the women wear Rikutu (cotton) on the upper half of their body and Rignai on the lower half, which is distinct for every clan. The men wear Rikutu (lower) and Kamchwlwi Borok (upper) on their bodies. The state's official language is Bengali, although Tripuri, Manipuri, and Chakma are also spoken. The region is dominated by Hindus and has a minority of Christian Baptists. Traditional foods of Agartala include Chakhwi and Muitru, and some famous rice dishes are Mami and Guriya. Bengali sweets are also a vastly consumed commodity in this region. Agartala celebrates Durga Puja, Ashokastami, and Kharchi Puja with great enthusiasm. The local tribes perform a wide variety of dances in celebration of these festivals including Dundoo, Hai Hak, and Cheraw. You can visit Agartala throughout the year but it does tend to get hot in the summers. The monsoons between July and September provide a beautiful backdrop to those who want to experience the region's natural beauty. The winters are cool and dry making them the ideal time for sightseeing and exploring the city on foot.
