Fondly referred to as just ëPondyí, was once a French colony and it combines traditional Indian sensibilities with French practices, offering tourists the best of both worlds. Pondicherry is a lively city on the east coast of India, with several pristine beaches, heritage buildings, interesting neighbourhoods, ancient temples, beautiful churches, and a colonial ambiance. Following Indiaís independence, efforts were made to take back colonies ruled by France in India, including Pondicherry. The colony and other French possessions in India were returned in 1956. In 1962, Pondicherry became a Union Territory. It was renamed Puducherry in 2006.
