About Chennai

Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, is home to countless people, cultures and traditions. Located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, it is called the ìGateway to South India" owing to its cultural and administrative importance in the southern part of the country. The city was previously called Madras; the name Chennai came from Chennapatnam, the town which was developed around Fort St. George, built by the British in 1640 CE. It is rightly called the oldest modern city because, since the colonial period, it has served as the backbone of tourism, heritage, industry, administration, sports and biodiversity in southern India. Chennai is a city of coffee and cosy cafes, street food and dusky dawns, cinema and songs, beaches and hills, temples and monuments, Carnatic music and traditional dances, trade and commerce. The features of the city are countless; the fourth largest city of India, home to Asia's most extensive library, the automobile hub of South India, connected through an extensive metro network are just a few to mention. It is a warm and humid city with an average temperature of 32∞C during summer and (25 ∞C) during winter. The diversity of Chennai makes it a land of several languages, festivals and religions. While Tamil is the official language, English, Urdu, Kannada, Punjabi, Bengali, French and Malayalam are also spoken across the city. Almost all religions of India, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Christianity and Buddhism, are practised in the city.
