About Pondicherry

Puducherry is the new name for Pondicherry. The former French colonies of Pondicherry, along with a few other states, make up the Union Territory of Pondicherry. While the states of Mahe and Yanam are bordered by Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, respectively, Pondicherry and Karaikal are surrounded by Tamilnadu. Putu and Ceri, two Tamil terms that denote ënewí and ëvillageí were combined to form Putucceri, the area's original name. In 2006, the cityís name was legally changed to Pondicherry. The foundation of Pondicherry was built in 1673. A French Company official named Bellanger moved into the Danish Lodge at Pondicherry on 4 February 1673. The ambitious attempt to develop Pondicherry from a tiny fishing town into a prosperous city was started by FranÁois Martin, who was appointed the first governor by the French Company in 1674. The four areas of the territory are all well-liked beach destinations. The large roadstead offshore is accessible by walking down any of Pondicherry's principal streets, which all run parallel to one another. There is a canal that divides the city in half. The roadstead of Pondicherry's port was previously a harbour, but now ships anchor 1.5 to 3 km offshore due to the absence of a harbour, which was regarded as the greatest on the Coromandel Coast. There is a pier, a freight landing area, and a promenade. Grain, sugarcane, cotton, and nuts are the main local crops, and there are artesian wells in and around the city that provide a significant amount of water for irrigation (groundnuts).
