About Pondicherry Airport

Pondicherry Airport (IATA: PNY, ICAO: VOPC) is situated in the town of Lawspet in Pondicherry, an Indian Union Territory. The airport is 3 km from the city centre and 8.1 km from Auroville, a futuristic community of people from across the world. Only non-scheduled flights operated till 2008, along with the local flying school. In 2007, the government of Puducherry decided to build a new terminal building and expand the airport. On January 18, 2013, a SpiceJet flight from Bengaluru was the first passenger flight to land at the new terminal. Since August 2017, the airport has started functioning normally again under the UDAN scheme. The current single asphalt runway at Puducherry Airport, capable of handling smaller aircraft, measures 1500 metres in length and 30 metres in width and is aligned 07/25. It has a new terminal structure with space for 300 people at peak times and an apron measuring 100 by 150 metres. Moreover, an aerodrome beacon is available to help travellers find their way around Puducherry.

About Pondicherry

Puducherry, commonly known as Pondicherry, serves as a Union Territory in southeastern India. Pondicherry is about 170 km south of Chennai on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. It is surrounded by the state of Tamil Nadu. In 1674, the French bought the town from the native monarch and turned it into a trading post. In the late 17th century, the French and Dutch fought often in the colony of Pondicherry, presently the Puducherry Union Territory. The British invaded and occupied the area several times. The town was regarded as a French colonial property until 1962. Puducherry is the administrative hub of the union territory and a popular beach destination. It is home to Pondicherry University (founded in 1985). Shri Aurobindo established his Hindu ashram (religious retreat) in the city. To the north of the ashram is the international township and study centre founded by him.

The airport is about 10 km northeast of Pune's old town centre in Maharashtra. It is run by the Airports Authority of India. A brand-new international airport is planned due to the space limitations of the current airport. Shortly, the airport will be accessible to the public under the name Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje Airport. The Pune Airport handled 9,070,917 passengers between April 2018 and March 2019. However, due to the recent coronavirus outbreak, a significant decline was observed (2,137,859) between April 2020 and March 2021. The airport has a single-passenger terminal from which both international and domestic flights depart. Passengers can shop, eat, get medical help, use an ATM, find a place for their child to play, exchange currency, smoke in designated areas, or use the post office. Passengers can use the taxicab and auto-rickshaw services for travelling to and from the airport. Private car rental and coach services are also available. In addition, PMPML, a public transport bus service provider, offers a shuttle service between the city and the airport.
