About Puttaparthi Airport

The Sathya Sai Airport is located in the Indian city of Puttaparthi (IATA: PUT, ICAO: VOPN). The airport is named after Sri Sathya Sai Baba, an Indian saint, philanthropist and spiritual figure known both nationally and internationally. This airport was built in 1990 to support the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences in an emergency by providing emergency services that require patients to be airlifted out of the state. Therefore, the services at this small airport are more adapted to accommodating charter flights than passenger airliners. The airport's terminal building and 1,000-metre airstrip were constructed primarily for such purposes. Later, it extended the runway to make room for the usage of larger jet aircrafts as sometimes the runway is also used for dignitaries. The Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Puttaparthi, continues to get air service from the airport for emergency travel requirements. There are no commercial scheduled flights operating out of this airport currently and there is no recent update on whether it will happen in future either.
