About Kolhapur

Kolhapur is situated in the southwest corner of Maharashtra state, India. It lies on the banks of the Panchganga River. Kolhapur is one of India's oldest cities, surrounded by the Sahyadri Mountains. Kolhapur is an ancient city with footprints of Jains, Hindus, and Buddhist monks and their ideologies. It has six defined periods of prosperity, ruled by the Mauryas, Andhras, Chalukyas, Silhar, Bahamani, and the Marathas. The Marathas were among the most prosperous, and Kolhapur was once part of the large Maratha Empire . But it became a separate princely state and was the seat of British rulers for the Deccan States. The city flourished under Maratha rule during the 18th century under Shivaji II and was an important centre of trade and commerce. However, it remained an important Hindu pilgrimage centre, with many temples and shrines dotting the cityscape. Today, Kolhapur is a relatively small city with around half a million population. The city is known for its delicious cuisine, especially spicy mutton dishes - Tambda rassa and Pandhara rassa. It is also famous for its traditional Kolhapuri sandals, which are made from buffalo hide and are prized for their comfort and durability. Kolhapur has a tropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. Therefore, the best time to visit the city is from October to March when the weather is cool and pleasant.
