Guwahati International Airport (IATA: GAU), formerly Borjhar Airport, is officially known as Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. The airport is Northeast India's largest and busiest international airport. The airport is named after Gopinath Bordoloi, the first Chief Minister of Assam, and is located in Borjhar, about 15.2 km from Guwahati. The airport has two terminals. Domestic flights are handled by Terminal 1, which has direct connections to roughly ten Indian destinations. During rush hour, the domestic terminal can handle up to 500 passengers. Rajahmundry Airport (IATA: RJA) is located in Rajahmundry, about 13.2 km from the city centre. The airport sprawls over an area of 366 acres, and was built during the British era. Vayudoot, an Indian regional airline established on January 20, 1981, as a joint venture between two state-owned carriers, Indian Airlines and Air India, operated from the airport between 1985 and 1994. The state government and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in February 2007 to improve the airport for a total cost of INR 23 crores. Construction of a new terminal at 135 crores is suggested as part of the expansion plans. Around 1,400 people would be able to travel through the new terminal. Currently, there is a single terminal at Rajahmundry Airport, operating only domestic flights. It consists of 3 boarding gates, and has a capacity of up to 150 passengers. About Rajahmundry

The city was named after Raja Raja Narendra, the ruler of the Chalukya dynasty who ruled over it in the 11th century. In 2015, the city was renamed Rajamahendravaram, replacing the former name Rajahmundry. It is the ninth most populated city in the state of Andhra Pradesh, and is an important transportation hub for surrounding areas.
