The city of Salem is located on the Tirumanimuttar River in Tamil Nadu. According to archaeological information, Salem has been inhabited as far back as the Neolithic Period. The region was formerly a part of the independent Kongu Nad, but Chola, Vijayanagar, and Muslim emperors captured it later. In 1797, it was given over to the British. Salem has long been famous for its manual weaving of cotton and silk, and has evolved into a major industrial hub with electrical and chemical plants, tool workshops, and brass rolling mills. Salem is a geologist's dream because it is surrounded by hills. It is predominantly an agricultural region with a focus on peanut, fruit, coffee, cotton, and coffee (groundnuts) crops.
