About Lucknow

Lucknow is the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh. It lies on the banks of the Gomti River, in the centre of the state. Lucknow rose to prominence in 1528, when it was seized by Babur, India's first Mughal emperor. The city was annexed to the province of Oudh by his grandson, Akbar. When the Sepoy Mutiny broke out in 1857, British commissioner Sir Henry Lawrence and the European residents of Lucknow were trapped for many months before being rescued by British soldiers. The British then abandoned the city until they regained India's control the following year. There are remarkable architectural examples in Lucknow. It has several historical places that tourists love to visit. The Rumi Darwaza, or Turkish Gate, was designed in 1784 after Istanbul's Sublime Porte. The Residency, which was the site of the British forces' defence during the Sepoy Mutiny, is one of the best-preserved monuments. In 1957, a memorial was created to honour the Indian soldiers who were the martyrs of the revolt.
