About Shimla

Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and one of the most picturesque hill resorts in northern India. It served as Indiaís summer capital from 1865 to 1939 during British rule. The city is located at a height of 2,200 m above sea level and is well-known for its pleasant hillside hikes surrounded by pine and oak trees. The city's stately buildings, notably the Shimla State Museum, Christ Church and Viceregal Lodge, are reminiscent of its colonial past. Shimla was host to many significant political meetings including the Shimla Accord of 1914 and the Shimla Conference of 1945. After Independence, Shimla functioned as the headquarters of the state of Punjab, until the city of Chandigarh was developed. Shimal is an agricultural trade hub and is known for its handloom, wooden handicrafts, apple orchards and brewing industries. Although Shimla is a year-round destination, it is best visited from March to June when the temperature ranges from 15∞C to 30∞C. From December to January, the hill station attracts visitors for plenty of skiing and skating opportunities. Hindi and English are the most commonly spoken languages in the city, while Pahari dialects and Punjabi are also spoken by some residents.
