The airport serves the city of Madurai and the surrounding regions in the state. It is the 36th-busiest airport in India. Madurai airport is located around 12 km south of the city centre, close to State Highway 37. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) had commissioned the construction of brand new integrated passenger terminal facilities at the airport to accommodate the growing volume of domestic and international passenger traffic. However, the Airports Authority of India handles civil operations. Even though it was recognized as an international airport in 2005, Go First only operated flights to Sharjah for a few months before they were suspended. Currently, Air India operates Hajj flights from Srinagar. Amenities such as a food court, small independent food outlets, handicrafts shop, ATM, currency exchange, chocolate shop, and WiFi are available at the airport. A total of four sky bridges connect the terminal. In December of 2017, the government entrusted the airport with running night operations. In August 2018, the DGCA Team completed a test flight, which was successful. On March 19, 2021, commercial night flying operations commenced at the airport when a Go-Air flight bound for Delhi took off at 19:15 IST. This marked the beginning of commercial night flying operations at the airport.
