Bangalore is the capital city of the state of Karnataka. It is more popularly known as the "Silicon Valley of India" because of its status of being the IT and software hub of the country. The earliest recorded history places Bangalore as a settlement in the 16th century, built by the chieftain of the Vijayanagara Kingdom, Kempe Gowda. It has since been an important centre of trade and culture in the Mysore state, and subsequently, it came under the control of the British, who established a cantonment in its centre. In recent times, Bangalore has become a hub for education and public sector employment, especially after it became the state's capital in 1956. The focus on education and employment sectors in the city soon paved the way for the flourishing of the Information Technology sector in the 1990s. Known for its year-round pleasant weather, Bangalore experiences a moderate climate. The best time to visit is during the winter months, i.e., from October to February.
