About Coimbatore

Coimbatore, also known as Kovai or Covai, is a major city and industrial centre in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is situated on the western edge of the state, close to its border with Kerala. The city is also a gateway to the popular hill-station of Ooty, also known as Udhagamandalam. Coimbatoreís history dates to the Sangam period, that is, the 1st to 4th century CE. During this time, Coimbatore was ruled by the Cheras. Trade and commerce flourished due to the cityís location at the entrance to the Palakkad Gap. This is a major gap in the Western Ghats, which allowed an ancient trade to pass through, linking major ports on the west coast of India to Tamil Nadu. Coimbatore and the surrounding region passed to the Cholas in the 10th century and, later, the mighty Vijayanagara Empire. In the mid-16th century, the Madurai Nayaks took charge, till the region fell to the Kingdom of Mysore in the late 18th century. Eventually, the colonial British annexed Coimbatore and made it a part of the Madras Presidency. Today, Coimbatore is a flourishing city in Tamil Nadu. A major industrial city, Coimbatore experienced a textile boom in the early 20th century and is still known for its textiles. Coimbatoreís famous Kovai Cora Cotton has, in fact, been given a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The city also makes jewellery, agricultural implements, automotive components and motor pump sets. Interestingly, Coimbatore has been assigned a GI tag for its famous ëCoimbatore Wet Grinderí, and it is the largest manufacturer of ëwet grindersí in the country. The city played an important role in the Indian freedom movement and it was after independence that industry really boomed here. The people of Coimbatore are traditional. They are also known for their entrepreneurial skills. The language spoken in the city and across the region is Tamil. Coimbatore is situated in the lap of nature. It is flanked by mountains to the west and reserve forests to the north. Some of its major attractions, therefore, are nature-related sites, such as the Monkey Falls, Cholayar Dam, Aliyar Dam, Botanical Garden, and Vaitheki Falls. It is also a city of temples, some of the prominent ones being the Sree Ayyappan Temple, Eachanari Vinayagar Temple, Arulmigu Maruthamalai Murugan Temple and Palamalai Ranganathar Temple. Lakhs of devotees thus visit the city year-round, boosting tourism in the region.

About Tirupati Airport

About Tirupati

Often referred to as the ëspiritual heartí of Andhra Pradesh, Tirupati is a holy city in this South Indian state. Located in Chittoor district, Tirupati is believed to be the abode of the Hindu deity, Lord Venkateswara, a form of Lord Vishnu, and Lord of the Seven Hills. It is a base for devotees to visit the famous Sri Venkateswara Temple, one of the most-visited temples in India. Since the temple draws millions of devotees from across India and even overseas, the city of Tirupati is one of the most prominent pilgrimage centres in the country. The Sri Venkateswara Temple is also called the Balaji Temple, Tirupati Temple or Tirumala Temple. It is situated on the summit of the Venkatadri Hill, one of the seven peaks of the Tirumala Hills, around 27 km north-west of Tirupati. The seven peaks of Tirumala are symbolic of the seven hoods of Adisesha, the serpent under whose hood Lord Vishnu is said to reside. At a time when various items across India are being awarded the Geographical Indication tag, the Tirupati Laddu has been assigned a GI tag. The Tirupati Laddu is the prasad, or the offering at the Venkateswara Temple, and this means only the trust that manages the temple can make or sell it. While the Sri Venkateswara Temple is usually in the spotlight, there are many other temples in Tirupati that devotees visit, the prominent ones being the Sri Kalahasti Temple, Kondandarama Temple, Parashurameshwara Temple and the ISKCON temple. Thereís a lot more you can do while visiting Tirupati. Not far from the city is the Chandragiri Fort, the temple towns of Kanipakam and Srikalahasti, and the Talakona Falls. The most widely spoken language in Tirupati is Telugu but since devotees come here from far and wide, you can get by with a little English and a little Hindi.
