About Goa

Situated about 400 km south of Mumbai, Goa is one of the smallest states in the country. While Maharashtra lies to its north, Goa is bounded by Karnataka on the east and the south. The mighty Arabian Sea surrounds its western boundaries. Its capital city, Panaji or Panjim, lies on the north-central coast of the mainland.Initially, Goa was a Portuguese possession. On achieving independence in 1947, India claimed Goa to be a part of its territory in 1948 and 1949. Therefore, Portugal transferred Goa and its other possessions lying in the Indian subcontinent under severe pressure. After a lot of turbulence and turmoil, Goa finally became a state in 1987.The 105 km coastline of the mainland is characterised by estuaries, sandy beaches, and promontories. Low and forested plateaus merging with the wooden slopes of the Western Ghats constitute its eastern interiors. The island lies between the mouths of the two large rivers, Zuvari and Mandavi.Having an equable climate, the temperature generally ranges between 30 ∞C (highest) and 20 ∞C (lowest). During June and September, a southwest monsoon blows in the state. Goa is most likely to receive around 3,000 mm of rainfall every year during the monsoon season.Due to its Portuguese colonial heritage, Goa has cultivated a diverse cultural landscape. Its population is a harmonious blend of Hindus and Christians. The state is also home to a substantial number of the Muslim population and smaller communities such as Sikhs, Jains, and those who practise local religions. Since Portuguese was the primary language of the state, several Goans continue to bear Portuguese names and surnames. However, most of them are fluent in Marathi, Konkani, or/and English nowadays.Agriculture is the predominant occupation of the Goan economy, and they cultivate a variety of crops like rice, cashews, coconut, and so on. Being located close to the coast, the state also actively participates in the fishing industry.Since Goa has a mixture of cultures, there is no lack of enthusiasm while celebrating festivals. Goa Carnival is one of the most happening festivals when the state witnesses non-stop merriment at its peak. The entire state is seen grooving to the throbbing beats of merriment during the dazzling celebrations. Goan customs reflect secularism and spread the message of how one needs to be tolerant towards other religious traditions.
