Before dying, the devil requested that the territory be named after him, and so the location became known as Kolhapur, the mythological story suggests.

Trivandrum International Airport or Thiruvananthapuram Airport is the first airport to be established in the state of Kerala and the sixth international airport in India, having been established in 1991. It is spread across an area of 750 acres, it is located approximately 3.7 Km to the west of the city centre. In addition to this, Trivandrum Airport is also used by the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the coast Guard for their strategic operations. There are two terminals in the Airport, one is used only for Domestic flights while the other allows both Domestic and International Flights. Trivandrum Central is just 4 KM away from the airport.

It was controlled by the Ay Dynasty, which had its origins in today's Tamil Nadu. They were vanquished by the rulers of the neighbouring kingdom of Kollam, who had ruled Thiruvananthapuram for years. They were defeated in the 18th century by Marthanda Varman of the House of Travancore. Thiruvananthapuram was designated as the capital of his kingdom. When Maharaja Swathi Thirunal reigned, the city reached its zenith and became a centre of art and culture. Following independence and the formation of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram was chosen as the new state's capital.
