About Mumbai

Originally known as Bombay, Mumbai is the capital city of the state of Maharashtra. Located on the Konkan Coast along the Arabian Sea, Mumbai is hailed as the Financial Capital of India and is also popularly called the ìCity of Dreamsî. The name of the city was officially changed from Bombay to Mumbai in 1995. It was named after the local goddess Mumba Devi who is a reincarnation of goddess Parvati, Lord Shivaís consort. The fisher folk from the Koli tribe are said to be the earliest inhabitants of this city. It was part of King Ashokaís empire and many rulers after him until 1534 AD. The city was ceded to the Portuguese by Sultan Bah?dur Shah who called it ëBom Bahiyaí meaning ëthe good bayí. The Portuguese gave the city to the British as a dowry to King Charles II when he married Catherine of Braganza (sister of the King of Portugal). The Crown in turn, relinquished the city to the East India Company which made it its headquarters in 1687. With the opening of the Suez Canal, Bombay became one of the most important ports in India. The climate of Mumbai is hot and humid for most of the year. Mumbai is a fast-paced city that is home to diverse ethnicities, religions, languages, and cultures. The most important festivals celebrated here are Ganesh Chaturthi, Dahi Handi, Navratri, Eid, and Durga Puja among others. The most common languages spoken here are Marathi, Hindi, English, Urdu, and the local dialect ó ìBambaiya Hindiî. Local delicacies like Vada Pav, Pani puri, Bhel puri, Pav bhaji, Chivda, and Modak form an integral part of the cityís food culture. The Indian film industry, Bollywood, is central to Mumbaiís identity and is also the reason behind the moniker, the ìCity of Dreamsî.
