About Pondicherry

Pondicherry is a union territory situated in the southern part of India, along the Bay of Bengal. It was initially under Dutch rule but was seceded to the French in the 18th century till India gained independence. During the Indian freedom struggle, Pondicherry became a safe haven for Aurobindo Ghosh, the Bengali revolutionary nominated twice for the Nobel prize and hunted by the British for his political activities and writings. Here, he started a community for spiritual seekers, known today as the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. He started the project with Mira Alfasa, also called the Mother, who eventually created the Utopian society of Auroville. Even today, people from all over the world come to Pondicherry to learn about Indian spirituality, yoga, and more. Moreover, the ashram has created small-scale cottage industries to support sustainable and local businesses. Tourists flock to Pondicherry to relax at its peaceful beaches, spend time introspecting and meditating at Auroville, enjoy authentic French cuisine, and look at the mustard-coloured French buildings overlaid in bright pink bougainvillaea.

About Tuticorin

Tuticorin is a port city in Tamil Nadu that is famous for its pearls and natural sea shells. The beautiful coastal town is also known as Thoothukudi and was historically an important centre of activities. Tuticorin was initially a part of the Pandyan Kingdom in the 7th century. After that, the Chola dynasty expanded into the area in the 9th century. Eventually, the Portuguese arrived at its port in 1532, and then the Dutch seized control in 1649. Finally, the British fought for the territory and won, making the maritime city an important port for the East India Company. This was why V.O Chidambaram Pillai, a leader of the southern revolution against the British, started the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company along with Bal Gangadhar Tilak, in Tuticorin. Since the British had a monopoly on the trading and waterways, launching their first steamer in 1907 was a great revolt against the British Navigation and shipping activities which was the soul of their trade business and thus colonial stronghold. Tuticorin is the largest salt producer in the state, contributing 30% of the countryís salt production. The region has a coastal line of 163.5 km. The climate is tropical, with hot summers. The best time to visit the city is during winter, between December and March.
