About Gwalior

Gwalior, a city in northern Madhya Pradesh, was founded in 8th century AD when a local king Suraj Sen contracted a deadly disease and was cured by a hermit-saint Gwalipa. As gratitude, the city was named after him. The city is also known for giving the country freedom fighters like Rani of Jhansi and Tatya Tope. The city is well-known for its palaces, temples, chhatris, the annual Gwalior Fair, and the Tansen Musical Festival. Gwalior is home to the prominent Rani Lakshmibai monument. As a commercial and industrial centre, Gwalior produces footwear, stone sculptures, sugar, oilseeds, cotton, and other commodities. Gwalior is located approximately 120 km south of Agra. The city was part of Gwalior princely state. The state was ruled by the Sindhia family, a Maratha dynasty that controlled much of northwestern India during the second half of the 18th century. The princely state was under British domination in the 1840s. During the Sepoy Mutiny , the Sindhia ruler of Gwalior aligned with the British, but the rulerís army supported the mutineers and occupied the city briefly, only to be crushed by the British. In 1948, the princely state became a part of independent India. Winter is the best time to visit Gwalior. Summer in Gwalior is hot and the city receives heavy rainfall during the monsoons. The four-day Tansen Samaroh, a music festival, is celebrated annually in December in Behat village of Gwalior district. Artists and classical music fans from all over the world gather here to pay tribute to Tansen, the great musical maestro in Mughal Emperor Aakbarís court. The event is held close to the tomb of Tansen.
