About Chennai

The capital of Tamil Nadu, Chennai, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in South India. This dynamic metropolis, formerly called Madras, can be found on the Coromandel Coast. Initially, during the rule of the Nayakars, Chennai was named Madras, inspired by Madraspattinam. It was a fishing village at the time, situated to the north of the area that is now Fort St George. The monarch of Vijaynagar traded part of that land to the British, which now accommodates the Secretariat Complex of the Government of Tamil Nadu. The British officers kept the name Madraspattinam. The local populace, however, called the city Chennapattinam. Another story dictates that the town was named Chennai in honour of Damal Chennappa Nayakkar, a Nayak ruler. In 1996, the government officially renamed it Chennai. Chennai is thought to be the doorkeeper of South Indian art, culture and traditions. The splendid classical dance form of Bharatnatyam and its unique cuisine make the city a representative of South Indian art and culture. With the lustrous silk sarees that are traded here and the wide variety of temples and churches, the city is also the ideal place from which travels to other spots in Tamil Nadu can take off. Chennai is also referred to as the ìDetroit of Indiaî, an appellation it acquired because of the high engagement of automobile factories encountered in and around the area. The city is also rich in sprawling beaches, bustling seaports, a multi-transport system, theme parks, industrial hubs, high-tech parks and universities. The population here is a combination of locals, ex-pats and people from the rest of the country.
