The airport is about 25 km from Vijayawada city. This airport served as an army base during World War II. It was later converted into a civilian airport. Vijayawada Airport has a single terminal that currently caters only to domestic flights. It can handle around 500 passengers at peak time. The Airports Authority of India has taken up the expansion project to make it suitable for international flight operations.
