About Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag, is a port city in northeastern Andhra Pradesh. The city is predominantly a commercial and industrial centre, but its unspoiled golden sandy beaches, picturesque regions, gushing waterfalls, lush forests, ancient temples, and spectacular caves draw tourists in large numbers. Visakhapatnam is popularly called the City of Destiny due to its soulful, natural beauty. Some centuries ago, a king of the Andhra Dynasty on his pilgrimage to Banaras, camped on the site of the present day town of Visakhapatnam. He was pleased with the place and built a shrine in honour of his family deity called Visakeswara. Hence, the district was named as Visveswarapuram, which was subsequently changed to Visakhapatnam. It is believed that the waves and currents from the sea swept away the shrine off the shore. The city is also known as Steel City, Jewel of the Coromandel Coast, and, most recently, Goa of the East Coast, as it boasts gorgeous scenery, laterite hillocks, and wonderful virgin beaches. The natural harbour of Visakhapatnam is created by two promontories, one of which is separated from the city by a small river. The harbour has been improved to the point that it can now accommodate multiple huge ships at once. The city is the headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy, and its port is the only protected harbour on the Coromandel Coast. The city is also a major shipbuilding centre. Iron ore, oilseeds, and manganese are exported from Visakhapatnam, and the city has an oil refinery, a steel factory, and industrial complexes for manufacturing jute, sugar, fertiliser, and petrochemicals. Its most famous beach, Ramakrishna Beach, has a submarine museum, which is the first of its kind in Asia.
