About Chennai

Chennai, earlier called Madras, is the capital of the southern state of Tamil Nadu. One of Indiaís major metros is on the east coast of India, the Bay of Bengal. Chennai was developed into a major administrative centre by the colonial British, who built the old city around Fort St George in the 17th century. It was from this core that Madras began to expand and grow. According to 2011 Census estimates, the city has a population of 4,646,732 today. When the British established their presence in Madras, they developed industrial zones to the north and northwest and built the main residential areas to the west and south. The old villages remained in the middle. The seven massive Dravidian temples in the neighborhoods of George Town, Mylapore, and Triplicane are the city's most prominent structures. Chennaiís rich historical past has made it an important religious centre. The city has more than 600 Hindu temples and numerous churches, including the world-famous San Thome Basilica. Dedicated to St Thomas, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ who landed on Keralaís shores in the 1st century CE, the church is said to enclose the tomb of the saint. He is believed to have been martyred in what is present-day Chennai. The present church was built by the British in 1898. The city is also a vibrant cultural centre and a hub of traditional performing arts. It is home to the Madras Music Academy, a towering cultural institution. Also headquartered here is Kalakshetra, and the Rasika Ranjini Sabha, which promotes theatre. Kodambakkam, a suburb of Chennai, is the epicenter of the Tamil Film industry due to the numerous film studios located here. Chennai is also a major port. From its beaches to its scrumptious seafood, Chennai has it all for travellers.
