About Kozhikode

Formerly known as Calicut, Kozhikode is a crucial city in Kerala situated on the Malabar Coast. It is the third-largest city in Kerala, with more than 3 million people in the district. Kozhikode is around 181 km from Kochi, the capital of Kerala. During the 12th and 18th centuries, the city was ruled by the royal family of Zamorin. It was traditionally a port that did heavy trading with Arabs and Chinese. In 1498, Vasco da Gama, the famous Portuguese explorer, arrived at the city for trade. After a short period, the Portuguese took over the city and became the new rulers. In 1664, the British established a trading post, followed by the French in 1698 and the Danes in 1752. In 1765, Hyder Ali, the Sultan of Mysore, captured the town. After 1790, the city went under British rule. Due to its proximity to the Arabian Sea, the city's temperature remains mostly the same throughout the year. With a humid tropical climate, Kozhikode witnesses heavy rainfall during the monsoon. The ideal time to visit this place is during the winter, i.e., from October to February. Apart from flights, you can also travel by bus from Coimbatore, Mumbai, Goa, and Bangalore. The city is also well-connected by rail to Chennai, Kannur, New Delhi, Palakkad, Kochi, and more.
