About Auckland

Auckland is the most populous and one of the largest cities in New Zealand. It is built over a narrow and relatively thin isthmus between the Manukau Harbour and Waitematā Harbour. It was also founded by Gov. William Hobson as the capital of this region. It was named after George Eden, who was once the Earl of Auckland and the first Lord of the British Admiralty.

Auckland is home to the indigenous Polynesian population of the Maori people. In the 19th century, the city was densely populated with several Maori communities. But after the British established the colonies, the population started to decrease, yet it is one of the dominant tribes in the city.

Till 1865, it was the capital city of New Zealand, after which the title was transferred to Wellington. In 2010, Auckland was further extended to encompass 11 smaller regions like North Shore, Manukau, etc.

The Waitematā Harbour sprawls over 180 sq km and has a maximum channel depth of 10 meters. It connects the city to several other regions of the world through waterways. In 1959, the Auckland Harbour Bridge was constructed to connect that district of North Shore with the Waitematā Harbour.

The city is considered the prime centre of the television industry of New Zealand, thereby offering an excellent insight into the country's entertainment industry. It houses some famous museums of this country, like the War Memorial Museum, the National Maritime Museum, and the Museum of Transport and Technology.
