About Mandalay Airport

Myanmar's domestic airport serving Mandalay and the surrounding region is called Mandalay Chanmyathazi Airport (IATA: VBC, ICAO: VYCZ). Mandalay International Airport has taken over most of its functions. The airport was officially opened in 2000. The project involving its construction was financed by the government of Myanmar, the State Peace and Development Council, through the Thai Exim Bank.

In May of 1942, the Imperial Japanese Army took possession of the airport. Beginning in late 1942, Allied bombs pounded the city and airport until Japanese resistance collapsed on March 21, 1945, allowing the British 14th Army to march in and take control. The terminal building was built with a built-in air conditioning system, fire prevention system, and backup power generation system.

Due to the human rights issues in Myanmar that have led to a variety of international restrictions, the airport almost never operates at full capacity. This also hampers any upcoming developmental projects.

The airport includes six regular elevators, one freight elevator, three regular escalators, and a baggage handling system. Travellers can avail services such as currency exchange, shared and private taxi transfers, duty free shopping and dining at the airport. However, if you have a substantial layover at the Mandalay airport, you may have to travel 40 minutes to reach the nearest hotels, as accommodation facilities at the airport are not well documented.
