About Madurai Airport

Madurai Airport (IATA: IXM), established in 1957, is 12 km from the Madurai railway junction. The airport has a strong domestic network and handles an average of over 1.25 lakh passengers per month. It is connected to all the major metro cities like Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, besides tier-II cities, such as Tirupati and Rajahmundry. An international airport, it is connected to Colombo, Singapore, and Dubai. 

There are two terminals at this airport and its new integrated building, at 17,600 sq m, is Tamil Nadu's second largest terminal after Chennai. The old terminal was transformed by AAI into a cargo complex. The airport has 16 check-in counters, 8 immigration counters at arrival and 4 at departure, 2 security counters, 4 customs counters at arrival, and 1 at departure.

About Madurai

Madurai is one of the oldest Indian cities with a rich cultural heritage. It is also known as "Thoonga Nagaram" or the "city that never sleeps". It was once called Madhurapuri, and it was considered the 'Athens of the East'. It grew 2500 years ago around a temple built by Pandian King Kulasekhara and was the capital of Pandyas.This city became famous during the Sangam period in the third and last conglomeration of Tamil scholars.
