I genuinely can’t understand any of the negative reviews of this place. It is listed as a 3-star hotel, but it is better than most 5-star hotels I have stayed at in the USA. From arrival the service was incredible. We unfortunately don’t speak Japanese (yet) and they had an English speaking employee at the front desk to check us in. She gave a detailed introduction to the amenities and we went to our room, which is also amazing. For those complaining about the mineral residue in the outdoor tubs, you must understand that it is actual hot spring water which contains minerals. It is inevitable and authentic. I have not had the food here yet, and will update this review once I have. So far, outstanding.

I was disappointed with my experience this time compared to my previous stay. During my previous visit, I enjoyed the delicious dinner and breakfast options, and the overall dining experience was excellent. However, this time, I noticed a shift to a semi-buffet style where guests had to serve themselves rice, soup, and dessert. Personally, I felt that this change took away from the traditional onsen dinner experience that I had enjoyed before. Additionally, the taste and presentation of the food were not up to the same standard as my previous visit. I believe that maintaining the authenticity of the dining experience and ensuring consistently high standards of taste and presentation are important in providing a memorable experience for your guests. I wanted to share my feedback in the hope that it can contribute to improvements and help Hotel Tenyu maintain its reputation.

I can’t say enough good things about my experience at this hotel. The room was spotless and extremely comfortable. The garden and views were beautiful - and every detail was taken care of from the moment you arrived. There were complimentary fresh cold teas, hot tea/coffee, and sparkling wine in the lobby - and you were given tokens for the ice cream machines. There is a hot foot bath on the terrace. The private onsen tub on the room balcony was so relaxing and peaceful. There’s a lovely gift shop featuring local items at reasonable prices. The food was fantastic - wonderful and diverse breakfast buffet choices with crab legs and other premium items. I had the Kaiseki dinner both nights (different menus) and the food was beautiful, delicious, and featured high quality ingredients. The hotel provided clear written English information about the services and amenities, and the staff were all extremely warm and friendly. There’s a well stocked convenience store in the complex and it’s very easy to catch transportation to the sightseeing spots in the area but you will be tempted to not leave the hotel!

This was exactly what we needed after the sensory overload in Tokyo. We were greeted by the friendly staff at the door after taking a free shuttle from the train station - we opted for a local train, took 30 minutes longer but went through much of the scenic views Hakone has to offer. We also opted for the Shabu-Shabu dinner which was great and paired with local sake. This place boasts the variety in the breakfast option and it did not disappoint.

As a foreign traveler, I have the language barrier and smartphone disadvantage. I explain to the front desk and hope they could make a phone call to a local hot spring which I have reserved, but they insist I must do it myself and can use the phone inside my room (not free). I join the ¥5,800 dinner, delicious but too little food, I have to eat a few bowls of rice. The unlimited food area serves only raw and authentic Japanese food, the fruit is definitely not fresh. Also, I only have one glass of sake, not as what the package says "unlimited." After hot spring, I drink the tea and eat an ice cream bar, I have immediate diarrhea. Late check out incurs additional charge. This could be a Japanese culture. This place is not convenient and not cheap. Plan smart. I don't think I'll return.
