Hotel San Fernando

For sure this place will look cute on your instagram, the staff is nice and it’s located in a nice neighborhood, but dang, this hotel was noisy. I checked out exhausted after 3 nights where I slept less than four hours a night. The acoustics are off here; a lot of the building materials are vintage (and cute), but hard metal, glass, tile surfaces where sound bounces hard. The rooms are all situated within 5-10 feet of a central stone staircase and room doors are very thin… I was pretty much awake at least until the last guest came back for the night: around 1a. At 6a the breakfast kitchen music will begin… and the cooks are banging pots around. After this, if you can manage to get back to sleep, you’ll be awake very soon by the people above you stomping around on the hardwood flooring and flushing their toilets, which you can hear, among many other people-noise-things. Service really wasn’t a part of the vibe here; there is no lobby and no concierge or amenities….. I’m sure this place is great for folks wanting to feel cute but it’s lacking in comfort and a place to rest for sure.

An attractive building with the familiar, cool Bunkhouse decor, but clearly fitted out on the cheap. Painting, plumbing, flooring all sloppily finished. And the usual Bunkhouse lack of closets: two drawer and six clothes hangers and a couple of hooks is all you get. Not a lot of service to speak of but the desk staff all seemed very happy to have their first job. But the real problem for us was that the noise from the open-top restaurant patio at the back of the building, literally 12 ft below our window and hosting a stream of merry revelers. They do close at midnight so then you then you can enjoy the sweet symphony of stacking the chairs and bussing the plates and glassware and silver by the chatty cleanup crew. There’s no AC so you’re definitely going to want the windows open, but you’ll need earplugs and a white-noise machine.
