Hotel San Giorgio Matera

Wow! What a memorable experience to stay in this unique and interesting place! Our room was deeply embedded in the rock! I was skeptical 🤨? Could it be comfortable and easy enough? My worries were eliminated when we saw our room. The temperature was great and the amenities were top notch! Comfortable and spacious, our suite had a room below they called the wine cellar. It was beautifully lit so we took pictures and marveled at the beauty of the place. We had an unforgettable experience at the SanGiorgio!

Good location, friendly hotel staffs, and the suite we stayed in was quite roomy. But it wasn’t a comfortable place for a vacation stay. Here is the why: 1. There was no toilet in the bedroom. The suite we stayed in was a 1.5 story house, with a bed room on the 2nd half story. At night we had to go down and up stairs every time we needed to use toilet or get water or something. The stairs were quite steep, and were made of stone. And the stairs didn’t have a handrail. This staircase was L-shaped, but instead of a flat landing at its 90 degree turn, it had 2 triangle-shaped steps at the turn to connect the two straight sections of the stairs. These 2 triangle-shaped steps made walking downstairs a scary thing, especially without a handrail for us to hold on. In my opinion, this staircase was very unsafe for guests staying there, especially elderly people or small children. I myself once lost my footing on the 2 triangle steps while walking downstairs even though I was mindful and was walking down very slowly. Fortunately, at that moment my right hand was able to grab the edge of the 2nd story’s floor. So I was able to pull myself up from the tumble. 2. The bathroom was small but manageable. But the shower enclosure was extremely small, 2 feet X 2 feet (61cm X 61cm). I’m a skinny person, but I couldn’t take a shower without my body touching the shower walls or the glass door, not to mention bending down to pick up anything. Another thing, the bath towels were unusually small, 2 feet X 3 feet (61cm X 92cm), and unusually thin. I have never seen bath towels like that anywhere else. 3. Wifi had no signal or very weak signal most of the time. 4. Day-old bread for breakfast everyday. The breakfast was in-room, self-preparing and self-serving, with paper plates and paper cups provided. Every afternoon a hotel staff would deliver some foods to our suite for our breakfast next morning, these included: prepackaged shelf stable foods such as cookies and breakfast cereal, cold cuts, fruits, and a small bag of store-made bread. In the morning we made coffee for ourself. No hot food, of course. Not a quality breakfast I would expect from a “Superb Breakfast included” package, but the quantity was sufficient. Only complaint: in the morning, the day-old bread became stale, and there was no oven, toaster oven, or microwave oven to revive it.
