The rooms are very well appointed for the size and the price. The headboard doubles well as a night stand and having the couch can be helpful, although a C table would be useful given there is no where to probably work on a laptop with the small side table. The gym with a ski and bike erg is really good, although the gym is very bare otherwise. I stayed in an -03 room (I believe 1-6 rooms face the main street) on a low floor, which others complained about in reviews due to noise. During the day you can hear road traffic, but at night the city is fairly quiet and any noise is nothing more than white noise. Why 3 stars then? The wifi was very slow when I was staying. Usable, but videos would take some time to load and may buffer. Also, the lobby does multiple duty as a bar area and as a cafe, which seems to have a few people throughout the day. Upon checking out and I figured I sit at an open table and look up a couple things before going for lunch and then the train. After a few minutes the attendant came over and asked me to order something, which I said I just checked out and was leaving soon. I was told I needed to order something or I would have to sit at a couple chairs next to the elevators (basically there if you're waiting for someone) and then placed a card on the desk saying the table is for cafe only which wasn't there before. Ah, so the cafe section isn't really part of the hotel, just shares the space with the check-in desk for the hotel? No, I had a coffee there one day and I had to pay at the check-in desk. I was occupying space needed for the cafe? No, it was empty except me before being told to leave. I don't think I've ever been told as a paying guest of the hotel that I cannot use spaces within a hotel. Like someone off the street paying for a coffee has more right to the lobby than someone staying in the hotel? Bizarre. Sufficient stay in a central location, but would seek out a different hotel if I return to Kyoto.

I have stayed at Park Hotel Kyoto Oike on three separate occasions. I was satisfied with the facilities and services all three times. Some observations: - The 9th floor seems to be the highest floor. When booking, it is possible to request a room on a higher floor. This request so far has always been granted, for which I would like to thank the hotel staff. - There are rooms available that do not face any street. For light sleepers I would recommend this type of room. - When I stayed at this hotel last year (while tourists were not allowed in yet due to covid) all guests got a coupon for a free drink from the bar on the ground floor. It seems that this service has ended. - None of the reception staff I have interacted with seems to be Japanese. This is not a problem, they are polite and speak Japanese and English (and some staff members Mandarin). The reception staff is allowed to wear their own clothes, not a uniform. This is not the norm in Japan and gives the hotel a slightly casual appearance. - The staff sometimes does not know the exact rules when passports are required for which guests (for example: one Japanese national residing abroad with a foreign national). I thought this was odd for a hotel of this size, and perhaps the rules should be reviewed more frequently among the staff. - It is possible to leave your luggage after you check out. - On one of the occasions upon check in, the room smelled a bit like body odor. As the windows cannot be opened, this is not very pleasant, and I suggest the cleaning staff to use a room freshener of some sorts after the room has been cleaned. - The 'close door' button in at least one of the two elevators does not work. You can press the button, but the doors do not close. You have to wait until they close automatically.

I highly recommend this hotel and would not hesitate to stay here again. The gym is open 24 hours and has a decent weight selection. There a coin laundry and the hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the metro.
