Residence Inn by Marriott Portland Vancouver

Was shocked at how horribly this property is maintained. Rooms are the furthest from clean, kitchens are covered in grease and dirt, floors look filthy, shower liners smell of mold, pubic hairs in showers, old pizzas left in stove from previous guest. Room smells of mildew all over. At first Erica at the front desk was nice, but after bringing the cleanliness of the room to her attention, she turned out to not be so pleasant. She did offer another room, however after checking out that room, it wasn’t much better. Cleanliness is not a priority here. Wound up leaving and staying at another hotel nearby.

I debated on giving a 3 star instead of a 4 but ultimately this is a 3 star hotel and overall for it being a 3 star it’s great. Our experience was different since we stayed longer. Usually when your exposed to something on a longer term you start to notice the imperfections, quirks and details . This is a great spot if your doing a quick in and out trip 2-3 days max. Overall clean, decent free breakfast, location is great, amenities are good. Due to work we were here for about a month and a half. Overall the front desk staff is great. I did observe a few things during our stay, at times there were moments were there was unprofessional attitude in the way they spoke to guests. I didn’t really like that. One morning that I happen to wake early I noticed that someone asked about the coffee as it was from the day prior, and the response from the manager was “ok”. The guest had to rephrase the question and the manager snapped back. Everyone has bad days but the coffee situation wasn’t the first time. My husband was always up early and he also experienced not even having coffee before leaving to work. Breakfast is supposed to start at 6:30am during the weekday and sometimes they wouldn’t start exactly on time, it would go into 10-15 minutes later. Granted it is complimentary so can’t over complain, but again details. One employee who stood out for me that was overall genuinely nice and would go over and beyond was Pri. He’s usually there in the evenings and he just rocks. He was so kind and so helpful. His demeanor was genuine so that was refreshing. When it comes to the housekeeping services I was honestly really dissatisfied and disappointed. Brought it up a couple of times and it just wouldn’t get better. There was one cleaning lady whom I just didn’t want in my room anymore and the response I got was “we are short staffed I can’t do that”. Mind you I never left sheets on the bed, when they needed to be changed, I would take them off the bed and leave piled up. All the towels would go in one pile, I almost never left any dishes in the sink, if I did it’s because I had a load in the dishwasher already. Whenever this specific lady came to do our room sometimes she didn’t even clean the room she would just change towels and vacuum and then leave. I know this because on one specific occasion my daughter had gotten into my make up and had left a lipstick stain in the bathroom sink, it was still there after she had “cleaned”. I had to go and clean it. So long term stays just beware the cleaning becomes lazier and lazier. Regardless of how long one stays at a hotel if your paying the daily rate (which isn’t “cheap”) and cleaning is included in that price then we expect for that to be done properly. Another thing that’s interesting, they had a daily parking fee, yet in the parking lot there are signs that say they are not responsible for any theft or any damages that happen on the parking lot. It’s a bit ironic for them to charge a daily fee yet they don’t take accountability to any damages or theft. The gym was always overall clean. The pool, smells like an indoor pool for sure. No form of ventilation. You have to constantly ask for towels. Many days they aren’t stocked on towels and so you have to go to front desk for them to tell housekeeping. The bathroom inside the pool area was usually always gross. Sometimes no paper towels no toilet paper. Always a huge water puddle on the floor. It was just always a hot mess. Unfortunately for me, my kids were always in the pool so I’d see this almost on a daily basis. All in all, it’s decent for a 3 star hotel and a short trip. Wouldn’t mind coming back. My observations were merely based on the length of our stay.
