Sutton Place Hotel Ueno

tl;dr - a good value hotel with wonderful staff in a convenient location, but with seriously aging rooms. the location of this hotel is amazing, its right next to ueno station. check-in was simple and the person working the front desk was very nice. we actually arrived early and they were able to take all of our bags and sit them in their hallway for a bit while we went out exploring. its a nice, simple room. it features a fridge, tv, and has a full bathroom. each room also has their own wifi. the bathroom has a unconventional door though, it's a sliding door that closes where the sink is so you kind of have to reach quite a bit to get it all the way shut. there was no smell of cigarettes in our room, some other reviews said theirs smelled a lot like smoke, maybe we got a good one but my girlfriends is asthmatic so we were glad. the room was clean, but a bit dusty, nothing that was too bad it was most noticeable in some corners, near the walls, and under the desk. they do give you slippers though so it wasn't that bad. there was rust on some of the hinges, especially the rail the sliding bathroom door was on, again, nothing offensive, normal for an older room. this is where the dealbreaker for most people is: one of the other reviews i read also mentioned mold in their shower, and despite my shower looking mostly clean, i did see clear signs that mold was starting to grow on the tiles near the back. it wasn't anything horrible (yet) but this is something the hotel management definitely needs to address as i feel like most people won't want to gamble on whether or not their room has mold. fortunately we didn't stay there many nights and just covered the portion of the wall when we did have to shower, but most people won't want to even bother. keep in mind this hotel doesn't do housekeeping. you're expected to put all of your trash in bags and leave them by your door where it'll be collected, and any amenities you might need can be found on the third floor in the lobby. this wasn't a problem for us but might be an annoyance for others that expect housekeeping.

Location is a 3 minute walk from the station . You are practically getting an American crackhead motel style. I paid $120 usd for 2 beds , the original price was going to be $140ishy but thankfully the front receptionist honored the third party rates. Only reason I stayed here was because I was just arriving and was beyond exhausted. You can feel the bed springs , dirty restroom (with moldy shower / floor) ….very dirty and it stinks like straight up armpit. I’m not sure why the review isn’t allowing me to upload photos but please do not trust the ones that are uploaded by the hotel because they are straight catfish.
