        Stayed at the Alan for a second time after having an enjoyable experience December last year. Unfortunately things weren’t so great this time around. Things started well - after first being given a bad room with a broken and noisy air conditioning unit we were given a free upgrade to a much better alternative. Some reviews complain about ‘dated, tired, and dirty’ rooms but this was not the case with us. It was lovely, besides a few minor issues such as having only one teacup and no good mirror/socket placement. So why the 1 star review I hear you ask? Simple answer - the service. Described in one sentence it was a disorganised, lackadaisical, half-arsed attempt at running a hotel lobby/bar. I strongly doubt there was anyone in charge and if there was they should be fired immediately. Empty glasses and dead drinks all over the bars and tables around the lobby. Cheap festival beer trolley wheeled into the bar. Average breakfast which we didn’t finish, then had to stare at for 30 minutes as no one bothered to clear our plates. I could go on, but special mention to the star of the show: Arrogant barman (brunette, little bow beep style haircut) with a severe attitude problem complaining to his colleague about having 5 tables to serve between them. Same barman asked me if I wanted ice with my gin and tonic then served it without garnish, and when I asked for a slice of lemon he spent 5 minutes looking for a knife to no avail then in the end disappeared to the kitchen. Observed the same barman being equally rude and sour faced with other customers who also complained amongst themselves. I’ve worked in bars for over a decade and this was the worst excuse for a barman I’ve ever encountered. Steer clear of the Alan just to avoid this guy alone. In summary, avoid. Better options elsewhere!

        Stopped at the Alan whilst visiting Manchester for my birthday. The location is perfect! Its inside of china town, an 8 minute walk from Piccadilly gardens and located right next to a tram which takes you to the centre. We rang prior to ask if it was okay to keep our bags there until we check in - we got there and with no fuss they took it off our hands so we could have lunch prior to checking in. Staff was super nice, professional and just all around what you expect from a 4 star hotel. We came back and they sorted our room out with no issues, gave us our luggage and we went straight up to our room. Room was clean and a lot of storage for clothes and luggage, if you are thinking of staying for a week long trip. Bathroom was nice but the products used in their hand wash, shampoo, conditioner and body wash dispensers were really unpleasant. The beds were somewhat comfy but pillows just weren’t the best - bit too firm for my liking. All around a nice visit and would recommend.

        Had a great stay in The Alan over Christmas. On arrival, there was no record of our booking (we booked via a third party site) but the reception staff allowed us to check in while the issue was being sorted. The rooms could do with a lick of paint in places, but the Haeckels toiletries won me over. Bar and restaurant were lovely - the breakfast options were generous and delicious. And the location - two minutes from St Peter's Square Metro link - was perfect. Would definitely stay here again.

        On the face of it the rooms look great and are spacious. No sound proofing and so really bad noise both from room above and from street all night and so got very little sleep. Had to queue for 15 minutes to get a table for breakfast and then mine tuned up cold and no coffee until I was leaving to catch a train I was in danger of missing. No thank you.

        Our bedroom decor looked tired. Curtains not hanging on the track properly and a few stains and marks on the walls and carpet. However the bed was very comfortable. We had the four small plates option in the restaurant in the evening which was nice, the service was good and the bartender was friendly and helpful. We had a full English breakfast and scrambled eggs and smoked salmon the following morning..... The food was cooked beautifully. There was a shortage of cutlery despite the restaurant not looking that busy. Staff did not seem overly concerned by this when asked for the missing items....three of them stood chatting.... I had to interrupt their conversation and subsequently was told they had ran out of teaspoons. Not good.
