History of International Airlines in India

India’s first taste of international airlines happened with Imperial Airways, now called “British Airways”. This trip took four different aircraft and 20 different stops for fuel. We have come a long way! J.D Tata, the pioneer of airlines in India, invested in aviation in 1932 and formed TATA airlines, renamed it ‘Air India’ in 1946. Later, in 1948, Air India operated the 1st International flight from Bombay to London. As India moved forward in the 20th century, decade by decade, it also observed the addition of many new airlines, such as Deccan Charters in 1997, Jet Airways in 1995 and many more.

Today, the airline domain is highly competitive. Many small and big players operate international flights to and from India. Some of the popular names are British Airways, Malaysia Airlines, United Airlines, Air France, Singapore Airlines, IndiGo, Vistara and Qatar Airways to name a few.
