7 Days in Uttarakhand: A Hiking, Camping, and Wildlife Adventure

Hike through the Himalayas, camp in the wilderness, and spot Tigers on a 7-day trip to Uttarakhand.

The Himalayas have always held a special place in my heart. The very thought of standing in a lush-green valley with a variety of colourful flowers, dwarfed by the snow-clad mountains is a very tempting proposition. So when I got the opportunity to go on a 7-day trip to Uttarakhand with my friends this summer, I couldn’t resist signing up for it. We left Delhi in a reserved luxury bus, full of energy and excitement. Our 6 hour journey had started at night and we arrived in Nainital in the wee hours of the morning. The sudden change in temperature compelled me to put on my light jacket even before we checked in to our hotel.

Enchanting Nainital - A Lake Paradise

Nestled amidst the Kumaon hills, Nainital is a haven of beauty and tranquillity. We kicked off the day by taking a leisurely stroll along the scenic Mall Road, indulging in some early morning window shopping and savouring the delectable aroma of freshly baked goods wafting from the local bakeries. Our spirits were high as we made our way to the iconic Naini Lake, where we hopped onto a vibrant boat and glided through the pellucid waters as a gentle breeze brushed against us. Our boat ride took us to the enchanting Naina Devi Temple, perched on the edge of the lake. We climbed the stone steps, brimming with enthusiasm, and soaked in the spiritual aura that enveloped the sacred shrine.

Eager to explore more, we hopped into a cable car that transported us to the mesmerizing Snow View Point. As we ascended, the breath-taking panoramic views of the snow-capped peaks unfolded before our eyes, leaving us in awe of Himalayan grandeur. We clicked countless photographs, capturing not just the picturesque landscape, but also the joy and camaraderie we shared in that moment. Afterward, we ventured to the delightful Land's End – a scenic viewpoint that offered a bird's-eye view of Nainital. We found ourselves standing at the edge of a cliff, marvelling at the sheer vastness of the valley below. The endless stretches of emerald green forests and the distant shimmering waters of the lake made us feel like we were on top of the world. As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves back on Mall Road, relishing local street food and sharing stories of our favourite moments. The colourful shops and bustling atmosphere added a lively touch to our day, making it even more memorable.

Ranikhet - Where Nature Meets History

Leaving Nainital behind, we embarked on a scenic drive to Ranikhet, a hill station renowned for its natural beauty and colonial charm. It would be an understatement to say that at every bend of the road, the lush green landscapes and majestic views of the Himalayas mesmerized us. Upon reaching Ranikhet, we first ventured to the Chaubatia Gardens where we took a stroll amidst the fragrant apple and peach trees and plucked some ripe ones to savour their sweet juiciness. Next, we visited the revered Jhula Devi Temple, a historic shrine steeped in legends. The intricate carvings and the soothing chants created an aura of spirituality that touched our souls. As we tied colourful threads onto the temple's sacred tree and made heartfelt wishes. We couldn't resist the allure of exploring the town's quaint streets, lined with charming shops and cafes. We indulged in local delicacies, savouring the flavours of Uttarakhand cuisine, and strolled through the bazaars, admiring the intricate handicrafts and textiles. Our adventure continued as we made our way to the Bhalu Dam, nestled amidst the verdant hills. The shimmering waters mirrored the azure sky, creating a captivating sight. We sat by the banks, dipping our feet in the cool water, and basking in the lap of nature. The sun began its descent, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, casting a golden glow over the valleys below.

Almora - A Cultural Extravaganza

Our day in Almora began with a visit to the ancient Kasar Devi Temple. Perched atop a hill, it offered a mesmerizing view of the surrounding valleys and snow-clad peaks. The aura of spirituality and peace engulfed us as we soaked in the panoramic vistas and marvelled at the architecture of the temple. We then wandered through the traditional bazaars. The bustling streets echoed with laughter and the sound of bargaining, as we indulged in shopping for locally made souvenirs and traditional textiles. The day wouldn't have been complete without a visit to the renowned Bright End Corner. Standing on the edge of the viewpoint, we were treated to a magnificent sunset, painting the sky with hues of orange and gold, casting a warm glow over the entire town. The captivating view left us in awe of nature's artistry and provided the perfect backdrop for capturing cherished moments with our friends.

Kausani - A Slice of Paradise

We started our day by visiting the Baijnath Temple, an ancient shrine known for its exquisite architecture and spiritual significance. The intricate stone carvings left us in awe of the rich heritage of the region. As we ventured further, we found ourselves amidst the lush tea gardens that Kausani is renowned for. Walking through the vibrant green plantations, we absorbed the fragrant aroma and learned about the process of tea cultivation. The panoramic views of the majestic Himalayan peaks painted an awesome backdrop. In the afternoon, we relished a sumptuous picnic in the idyllic environs of Kausani. Sitting on a grassy meadow, we enjoyed local delicacies. We concluded our day by witnessing a mesmerizing sunset from the vantage point of Viewpoint Zero.

Jim Corbett National Park - Wild Encounters Await

Our final visit of the tour was to the Jim Corbett National Park. On our thrilling jungle safari, we eagerly scanned the wilderness for a glimpse of the park's famed inhabitants. The adrenaline surged through our veins as we spotted majestic tigers, graceful deer, and a variety of vibrant bird species in their natural habitats. The gushing waters of the Ramganga River accompanied us as we ventured deeper into the park. The diverse flora and fauna presented a picturesque backdrop as we clicked several pictures on our phones and cameras. Camping under the starry sky, we shared stories around the crackling bonfire, immersing ourselves in the symphony of the jungle's nocturnal sounds.

Farewell, Uttarakhand - Until We Meet Again

On my final day, I bid farewell to the captivating state of Uttarakhand. As I reflected on the week of exploration, my heart swelled with gratitude for the memories created and the experiences cherished. Uttarakhand had woven its magic through the serene lakes of Nainital, the cultural tapestry of Almora, the captivating vistas of Kausani, and the wild encounters in Jim Corbett. As I left, I carried with me the promise to return and unravel more of Uttarakhand's secrets, knowing that this incredible journey was just the beginning.
