Step away from Mumbai's bustle and welcome each year with a trip
A new year signifies new beginnings and cheer. It is a way to wipe the slate clean and start afresh. Many resolutions are made and broken. But the hope for a happier future remains.
I, too, had created a resolution many years ago – to start every new year with something new and fun. I consider myself fortunate that my resolution is almost unbroken (Covid notwithstanding).
So, every year in January, my husband and I set out to a new destination to ring in the new year in a unique and unforgettable way. Here's a list of some of my favourite trips.

In the first year of my travel resolution, we visited Della Adventure Park with our friends to get high on thrills. Sky cycling and the Swoop Swing were perfect for testing our appetite for heights. Then, we zoomed away on India’s longest Flying Fox zipline while soaking in panoramic views of the hills!
Other activities that revved up our adventurous souls were dirt biking and paintball! We got competitive as we raced each other in bumper boats and water zorbs! After an action-packed day, the couples split for a romantic ride through the green premises – on double-seater tandem cycles!
As we cycled, we waved to cute toddlers on the Baby Wagon and doggos enjoying the Dog Walk. Party fun came alive at night as we dressed up for virtual games and virtual dancing! Della Adventure Park had something for everyone. Whether you are a large group of friends and family, a couple, or a solo traveller, come here to start the year with thrill and adventure!
Another year, my husband planned a romantic escape in the middle of nowhere to unwind in the wild. But I couldn't imagine dealing with buzzing mosquitos and creepy crawlies throughout the night in the forest! To my surprise, he had found the perfect workaround – glamping on the banks of the beautiful Pawana Lake!
This location was perfect for experiencing solitude and solace. The tent's soft cushions and fairy-lit ambience added to the romantic factor! At night, the bonfire's flames danced in tune with the strumming of the guitar. Listening to live music, we relaxed and stepped away from reality. We slept looking up at the stars, whispering sweet nothings.
However, if you love to dance away the night, book a DJ. All services are at your beck and call for a glamorous camping experience.
Continuing with the romantic tradition, I surprised my husband with a trip into nature the following year. Surrounded by misty hills, Mulshi was the perfect getaway from Mumbai.
I booked a luxurious stay at the secluded Malhar Machi Holiday Resort. The plan was to escape into nature, soak in the greens and the crisp, cool air, and have candid conversations against the backdrop of the majestic Sahyadri range!
But first, we took a romantic boat ride to enjoy the lake. At sunset, we saw a solo traveller meditating and practising yoga.; truly a soul-soothing place! I was so relaxed the following day that I let my husband convince me to go on a nature hike along the Tamhini Ghat. This vacation near Mulshi Lake made for a truly rustic and refreshing experience.
Then came a year when we were sick of the city's traffic and chaos. So we escaped to Matheran, Maharashtra's popular hill station, mainly because it doesn't allow vehicles!
Matheran offers chilly weather and an escape into nature, and we looked forward to both. Our joy ride on the toy train made us feel like kids. We also got off the train and walked along the tracks through the forest.
As we walked to Dune Barr House, where we stayed, we left behind the people and the marketplace. Nature slowly enveloped us. At Dune Barr House, the colonial-era charm came alive as our refuge for the night.
The expansive verandas of this 170-year-old British mansion transported us into history! We marvelled at the living room adorned with eclectic showpieces from British times. The cellphone network was weak here, but we found a stronger connection – one with nature and history.
Spoiled by our previous trip, we wanted to experience nature again, but with a twist! The sweet smell of farm soil and the sound of gushing streams beckoned us. Sky Farms in Karjat became the perfect destination for such rustic relaxation.
We booked a unique picket fence cottage for our stay. Surprisingly, it was tastefully decorated with mellow lighting and beautiful art. The best thing was that our dog could join us too! Our doggo frolicked on the lawn at the cottage behind a secure fence. They even prepared special meals for pets.
We spent our day relaxing with a book and happily playing games of fetch. In the evening, we sang songs to the tune of the river. After sunset, we huddled around a bonfire, indulging in lip-smacking barbecued food and a game of cards.
We didn't even know when the day ended.
As my husband believes himself to be a true wine connoisseur, we decided on a trip to Nashik – the wine country of India. We even brought our friends along!
The expansive vineyard of Soma Vine Village was breathtaking. We couldn't wait to titillate our taste buds with the finest gourmet wines. The options to stay included a list of luxurious rooms, villas and service apartments. Our group booked an authentic villa for a relaxed stay.
We enjoyed delectable dishes under the starry skies at the WineINDine restaurant and then lounged around, chatting and playing board games. A night-time walk through the beautifully-lit premises brightened our spirits.
The next day, before departing, we decided to pamper ourselves with a session at the Oceana spa. So not only was our mind relaxed, but our body too was fully rejuvenated!
Winter is the best time to enjoy the sun, sand, and surf. But who has the time to travel to Goa? So we ended up in Alibaug, Maharashtra's popular beach destination. Opulence went hand in hand with hospitality at the Radisson Blu Resort and Spa. With spacious and luxurious rooms, we were in full pampering mode.
First, we walked about the lush green property for a romantic tete-a-tete. Then we took a stroll on the beautiful Nagaon beach to bid goodbye to the sun.
The perfect evening unfolded with delicious cocktails and dinner. We forgot ourselves as we danced the night with a peppy DJ's hip-swinging beats!
You can also soak in the serenity of Alibaug's village life at a homestay and enjoy a fun-filled beach time at the Varsoli and Alibaug beaches.
Last year, we just wanted to let loose and get the adrenaline rushing. We found our answer in Imagicaa – India's favourite themed destination.
This place is definitely for adventure junkies! We literally let our hair loose during the internationally acclaimed rides and attractions! The best part was that they were open through the day and much of the night. This, accompanied by mouth-watering food and drinks, made for a perfect getaway.
We tried to catch up on all the dances and performances as well, especially the evening parades that got both our feet and heart thumping.
Most of these destinations are only a few hours from Mumbai. So don't worry about missing out on work. Just pack your bags and head out for an adventure that will set the tone for the coming year.
