This one is my favourite. The Himalayan Writing Retreat lies in the foothills of the great mountain range. There are many getaways across the country but this one is different. Started by Chetan Mahajan, an ‘accidental author’, this place hosts two main events—the Himalayan Writing Weekend and the Himalayan Writer’s Retreat. Erika Krouse, an author and teacher, leads the latter. The events specially focus on how you can create a strong beginning for your draft as well as writing effective dialogue centred on specific themes. In addition to this, you will also learn how to create a compelling setting for your story.
Located in the serene hills of Maihar, this writers’ retreat is excellent for multiple reasons. It is a curated getaway for every creative mind and an ideal secluded place to work on your upcoming literary masterpiece. Amariya is my preferred writer’s cottage at Art Ichol. Taking my work outdoors and daydreaming on a hammock near the banks of the river Tamas is meditation for me. What more could a writer wish for?
Head to this retreat in Maharashtra, set amidst the rolling Sahyadri range, known for its unparalleled beauty. The retreat has consistently sparked my creativity and proven invaluable in overcoming writer's block. I love reading and writing here all day. The retreat also boasts a charming bungalow adorned with handcrafted furniture and furnishings, adding to the allure of this serene escape. Surrounded by abundant greenery, you can pick any spot to sit and write endlessly. The room is cosy and so is the relaxing setting by the pool. You will get delicious home-cooked meals as well as high tea and excellent hospitality throughout your stay. Apart from an immersive writing experience, you can also participate in poetry and memoir writing workshops. If you want to give wings to your writer’s spirit, this retreat is a great chance to experience the magic!
Located in a spacious bungalow surrounded by greenery in Bengaluru, this place is well-known for facilitating the birth of new ideas. It brings writers from around the world under one roof. Here, you can meet writers of diverse cultures, which is always a plus as it will broaden the scope of your work. If you are a free-thinking intellectual seeking new experiences, inspiration, and friendship in a pleasant environment, this writers’ retreat is the perfect getaway for you. The program allowed me to interact with visiting writers and local communities.
Read, write, reflect, and relax—this is what Indian Summer House is all about. You will love the supportive environment of like-minded people at this getaway. During my time here, I enjoyed early morning yoga, invigorating Ayurvedic treatments, and nutritious food, which comforted my mind, body, and soul. There are lush gardens enveloping the villas and other spaces where I loved to sit and write in solitude. It was like my slice of paradise where I could read, reflect, and review in peace. Moreover, this writers’ retreat also organises full-day, half-day, or short visits to various splendid tourist attractions.
There is something special about the mountains, isn’t it? Legendary authors like Ruskin Bond prefer living and writing in a tiny but peaceful place like Landour (Mussoorie). Similarly, Alekhya, flowing out of Parvati Valley in the Himalayas, can be your refuge from the outside world. Helping you transcend from the mundane, this place will let you find the right words for telling your story in the best way possible. Born out of the love for writing and offering a holistic environment, Alekhya lets your soul immerse in the craft, and is designed to satiate your creative urges. The retreat is located in a secluded apple orchard, where you can live with a bunch of writers, attend interesting workshops, and write at your own pace. The cherry on the cake—you can explore the beautiful valley via treks and forest walks.
This is a farm stay in the Shimla hills and is completely dedicated to writers. The retreat is for the moody monsoon month of August, where you can witness the apple harvest. No other guests are accepted during this time. The focus is entirely on writers and their craft. The best part is that you can stay here as long as you want (three nights minimum). I was given a desk along with access to the library, sitting rooms, billiards room, garden, terrace, family temple, yoga studio, and all the common areas. There were open group discussions every evening before dinner, around a warm bonfire. I also enjoyed the guided hikes through the orchards and forest despite the wet weather. I even volunteered for farm activities and cooking. I was fond of Michael and Devanshe, the facilitators of Himalayan Orchard, who vastly enhanced my writing skills with their combined writing experience of over five decades. If you also dream of getting away to write as well as meet fellow writers, then a writing retreat might be what you're looking for. These getaway options are some of my favourites.
