This bachelorette party is quite unpredictable!
Imagine this: you gather your girl gang to celebrate the end of singlehood and the beginning of a new chapter in your life, and become a highlight in all bachelorette rituals - drinking, dancing, and playing games - in a forest! Why not? Yes, it is not everyone's cup of lukewarm chai!
For my best friend Radha's (name changed) bachelorette party – we planned something unique. A slice of adventure along with regular bachelorette traditions.
Jim Corbett National Park is best known for its open jeep jungle safaris, where you can spot wild animals such as deer, tigers, wild elephants, and more. It was a perfect getaway for Radha, the final salute before she married and moved to France forever. She is the right amount of crazy, always up for spontaneous plans yet responsible. So, planning her bachelorette trip, I knew it had to be something offbeat with a spicy twist. But, the woman proposes, and God laughs.
We went to Jim Corbett in the hope of an adventure-filled all-girls trip. We, eight girls, took an overnight bus from Mori Gate in Delhi to Jim Corbett. After five hours of travelling in darkness, we reached our destination by 5 am. We checked into Sterling Resort starting our two-nights, three-days stay. We scored free accommodation, thanks to Radha, an esteemed member and an elite guest of the hotel.
The resort was spectacular, with breathtaking views of the mountains from our rooms.
We planned a safari on our first day and were super excited until the rain Gods changed our plans. It was the end of August and the year's monsoon season, and the rains were unpredictable. It wasn't the best season for jungle safari and the forest department had closed the ride to tourists.
You can imagine how bummed we all were! And to make things worse, it rained every single day we were there. It was almost as if nature was against us. Obviously, we were feeling dejected. But we couldn't let the weather ruin our mood. It was my best friend's bachelorette, for crying out loud! So, we decided to make the most of our time there.
The rain did spoil our mood. We had decorations for the bachelorette party, brought specifically for outdoors. We had a picnic table with good food and music. Sadly, that wasn't possible now. But being creative folks with a bunch of design degrees, we knew how to make the best out of the worst. I knew Sterling takes bookings for corporate gatherings and offsites. I asked the staff if they had a board room/conference room with a projector we could use for a couple of hours. They were reluctant at first. But since the resort was largely unoccupied, they eventually agreed.
So, for the alternate plan—since we couldn’t experience the actual safari—we decided to go on a virtual safari inside the resort. We created a wildlife theme as a perfect backdrop for a photo booth! We downloaded a tropical playlist, dressed in camo clothes and even wore hats for a wholesome experience. The completely oblivious Radha was awed to tears. That night we realised how important the company we keep is. No safari can ever match that.
The following morning was bright and sunny. Fresh as dew, we set off after a hearty breakfast of aloo parathas and chole bathure. We decided to trek down to a nearby river, to burn the well-earned calories. There’s a back gate/exit from Sterling to the spot. We packed sandwiches to eat by the river. On our way, we met a bunch of local kids cycling to school, and it was the sweetest encounter ever – taking us back to our school days aka simpler times.
The trek to the river was not easy since the rains had made the pathway extremely muddy and wet. It was slippery in places, and we took longer than usual to get there. It was a 2 km trek, which took us about 45 minutes. We sat by the river banks for barely 15 minutes when the sky turned grey again, and we knew it was about to rain cats and dogs. We were carrying umbrellas and wearing windcheaters, but we decided to head back since climbing uphill would be challenging in the rain.
Back at the resort, we bathed, dried and changed into warm, clean clothes. Then we sat with hot coffee to watch the rain pouring down the mountains, making the view all the more scenic! During the afternoon, we played table tennis, carom and cards. Later that night, we decorated one of the rooms with the props we'd got for the traditional bachelorette party and gave Radha the celebration of her dreams. The cake was the highlight of the evening – only because it was the best chocolate cake ever. What did you think?
The next day, we were supposed to take the afternoon bus back to Delhi. But there was yet another twist. The bus was cancelled due to heavy rains flooding the roads! We scrambled to check other options and booked two outstation cabs to the nearest railway station Kathgodam, about a 3-hour drive from Jim Corbett. We had no choice but to try our luck. We managed to get confirmed seats for the Shatabdi chair car train, but it only left the station after a two hours delay!
But, these seemingly unfortunate events gave us more time with Radha, and we took it as a sign that God wanted us to spend more time together and extended the trip! All in all, even though things didn't go as planned, Radha could say she had a unique bachelorette!
