October to April is the best time to visit Assam. The weather during these months is pleasant and relatively dry, allowing travellers to explore the lush landscapes, wildlife sanctuaries, and cultural attractions without the hindrance of heavy rainfall. Additionally, winter is the best time to witness the famous festivals of Assam, such as Bihu, which showcases the state's vibrant cultural heritage.
Your adventure begins in Guwahati, the gateway to the Northeast. Check-in to your accommodation and rest for a while before heading out for local exploration. Visit the Umananda Temple, a well-known religious site dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated on Peacock Island in the Brahmaputra River. Enjoy a boat ride to the island and bask in the serene surroundings of this ancient temple. Next, head to the Maa Kamakhya Temple, one of the most revered shrines in India. Dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya, this temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths in India and offers breathtaking views of the city from the Nilachal Hills.
Begin your day with a thrilling wildlife expedition at the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. Spread over 40 kilometres, this sanctuary is home to the one-horned rhinoceros, river dolphin and oriental pied hornbill. You can also choose to go on a jeep safari through the sanctuary to witness these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. In the afternoon, visit the tranquil Dipor Bil, a freshwater lake that serves as a haven for numerous migratory birds and other wildlife. This place is perfect for a small picnic and for watching birds such as kingfisher, fishing eagle, whistling teal, and pintail.
On Day 3, we depart for Manas National Park, a well-known biodiversity hotspot and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On our first day in the park, we will join an exhilarating jeep safari with an experienced guide and witness diverse wildlife, including tigers, elephants, golden langurs, and the elusive Bengal florican, with our own eyes. Additionally, one can experience the wilderness up close with an unforgettable Elephant-back safari, offering a unique perspective of the park's flora and fauna.
Put on your life jackets because we are going rafting! Day 4 begins with a thrilling river rafting experience in the gentle rapids of Manas River, an adventure that will leave you rejuvenated. The rafters travel through 35 kilometres of deciduous forests, which are home to more than 400 different bird species. In the afternoon, depart for the historical town of Tezpur, which is approximately 200 kilometres from the park. After reaching Tezpur, take a leisurely stroll around the town and relish the views of the mighty Brahmaputra River.
Explore the picturesque Nameri National Park, which is 35 kilometres from Tezpur. This 200-square-kilometre park is situated at the foothills of the Himalayas and is known for its diverse wildlife and rich fauna. Take a walk through the tranquil forest and you might spot some endangered species like the white-winged wood duck. In addition to a large population of elephants, the Nameri National Park is home to tigers, sambars, leopards, Bengal foxes, mouse deer, and jungle cats, among other species. From the park, head towards Agnigarh, an ancient hillock which offers panoramic views of Tezpur. According to Hindu mythology, Anirudha, Lord Krishna's grandson, was separated from his beloved, Usha, and imprisoned here by asura king Banasura. If time permits, spend some time at Bamuni Hills and witness the remnants of a 9th-century temple.
Embark on an enthralling journey to Kaziranga National Park, where two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinoceros population lives. Go on thrilling jeep safari through the lush grasslands and dense forests of Kaziranga, spotting rhinos, elephants, wild buffaloes, and a variety of bird species.
Proceed to Sibsagar, the historical capital of the Ahom Kingdom. Explore the ancient Talatal Ghar, a magnificent palace built with ingenious architecture to withstand enemy attacks; and Rang Ghar, a royal sports pavilion and one of the oldest amphitheatres in Asia.
Our next stop is Charaideo, the erstwhile capital of the Ahom rulers. Visit the sacred Dillighat, the burial ground of Ahom kings and queens. Explore the serene, beautifully landscaped Sri Haridev Bornamghar, an important center for the Vaishnavite culture.
Proceed to Dibrugarh, known as the ‘Tea City of India’. Experience the serenity of the Dinjoy Satra, a Vaishnavite monastery, and immerse yourself in its spiritual aura. Later, explore the vibrant town of Naharkatia, which has a significant influence of Assamese and British culture.
Before concluding your incredible journey, visit Namphake village, a unique settlement of Tai Phake people. Experience their fascinating culture and witness their distinct traditions and handicrafts.
