Chunchanakatte Falls is a magnificent waterfall located on the Kaveri River. It is surrounded by thick forests that seem to stretch as far as the eyes can see. As the water cascades over the rocks, it produces a thunderous roar that will resonate in your soul long after your visit. Interestingly, the waterfall’s origin can be traced back to the time of Ramayana. According to legend, Lord Rama asked his brother Lakshmana to strike an arrow on the ground to bring out water for Goddess Sita’s bath. This act is believed to have created the falls. In the monsoon season, the rocks near the falls display many colourful shades. Locals believe that these colours are the remnants of the shikakai and oil used by Goddess Sita during her bath. Adjacent to the waterfall stands the temple of Sri Kodanda Rama. Be sure to visit the temple before heading off. Location: Chunchanakatte village, Haliyur, Karnataka Distance from Mysore: 55 km Height: 66 ft How to reach: Take a bus to KR Nagar, and then a private vehicle to the falls.
As I ventured deep into the Brahmagiri mountain range in the Western Ghats, I came upon Iruppu Falls. It is also called Lakshmana Thirtha Falls as it flows on the Lakshmana Thirtha River. This waterfall's origin also dates back to the time of the Ramayana. Legend has it that during his exile, Lord Rama became thirsty and wanted water. To quench his brother's thirst, Lakshmana shot an arrow into the mountain to divert water from a small stream, thus creating Iruppu Falls. Unlike other waterfalls, Iruppu Falls allows you to get close and play in the water. There are also several changing rooms available on site. Doesn't it sound like a great weekend getaway spot? I highly recommend visiting Rameshwara Temple, located near the falls, especially during Shivaratri when many devotees come to pray. If you are a wildlife enthusiast, don’t miss the nearby Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. Explore its beautiful grasslands and abundant fauna, including tigers! Location: Kurchi, Kodagu district, Karnataka Distance from Mysore: 120 km Height: 170 ft How to reach: Take a bus to Kutta, then hire a private vehicle to the waterfall.
As you step into the private plantation in Coorg, Abbey Falls welcomes you with gushing water and picturesque greenery, along with the aroma of fresh coffee, cardamom, and pepper. Abbey Falls is formed by several small waterfalls joining the Kaveri River. It has a hanging bridge that offers a perfect view. As you stand on the bridge, be prepared to be drenched from head to toe. In early winter, Abbey Falls is surrounded by lush greenery and looks nothing short of spectacular. You won’t be able to turn your eyes away—or your camera, if you’re a photographer! Interestingly, Abbey Falls was previously known as Jessy Falls. A British officer who had visited the waterfall was so impressed by its beauty that he named it after his daughter, Jessy. Location: Madikeri, Karnataka Distance from Mysore: 125 km Height: 70 ft How to reach: Take a bus to Madikeri, then a private taxi to the waterfall.
Also known as the Niagara Falls of India, Hogenakkal Falls derives its name from two Kannada words—hoge meaning ‘smoke’ and kal meaning ‘rocks’—because the water spray resembles smoke rising from the rocks. The waterfall is formed by the Kaveri River as it enters Tamil Nadu from Karnataka. When you visit the falls, take a boat or coracle ride to experience a rush of adrenaline. As you get closer to the falls, the thunderous sound of water will linger in your ears and get your heart thumping. You can also trek over the rocks to a high point for gorgeous views. Did you know that the carbonatite rocks near Hogenakkal Falls are some of the oldest in the world? Location: Hogenakkal, Dharmapuri district, Tamil Nadu Distance from Mysore: 180 km Height: 2,300 ft How to reach: Take a bus to Dharmapuri, then a taxi to reach the waterfall.
Chelavara Falls is located on a tributary of the Kaveri River. It is locally known as Emepaare, meaning 'tortoise', because the water splashes on a rock shaped like a tortoise. If you are an adventure enthusiast and love trekking, then a getaway to this waterfall is a must! Trek through the dense forests surrounding the waterfall for stunning views of Coorg. You can even take a picnic to enjoy in the lap of nature. However, note that Chelavara Falls is not suitable for swimming since the water creates an accident-prone pool with a depth of 150 ft. Instead, you can check out the nearby tourist spots, such as Chomakund Hill, Karada Bhagavathi Temple, and Kekmani Bhagavathi Bhadrakali Temple. Location: Cheyyandane Village, Chelavara, Karnataka Distance from Mysore: 127 km Height: 150 ft How to reach: Take a bus to Virajpet, which is the closest bus stop. It is located 40 minutes from the waterfall.
The Shivanasamudra Falls is one of the largest waterfalls not only in India but also in the world! It is also known for its steep drop. The waterfall is located on the Kaveri River, which splits and creates two waterfalls—the Gaganachukki and Bharachukki. They reunite downstream and are together known as the Shivanasamudra Falls. Head to the nearby watch tower to check out the stunning views. Shivanasamudra Falls is surrounded by the Kaveri Wildlife Sanctuary, which offers picturesque views of nature. The waterfall plays an important role in generating hydroelectricity in Karnataka, as it is part of the country's oldest hydroelectric power projects. If you manage to get special permission to visit the power station, don't forget to ride in the old British winch car. Location: Malavalli Taluk, Mandya district, Karnataka Distance from Mysore: 72 km Height: 300 ft How to reach: Take a bus from Mysore to Malavalli. Then, trek for 5 km to reach the waterfall.

To get up close to Mallali Falls, you'll need to trek for at least 45 minutes, but the views are worth the effort. Location: Kumarahalli Taluk, Kodagu district, Karnataka Distance from Mysore: 134 km Height: 120 ft How to reach: Kumarahalli is the closest village with a bus facility.
