The journey to the resort

Borei Angkor Resort and Spa is conveniently located near National Road 6. As Chan drove me towards the resort in his tuk-tuk, he remarked, "Everything is nearby. It’s in the heart of Siem Reap." Tuk-tuks are one of the most popular forms of transportation here. However, they look a bit different from the ones I have seen in other parts of Asia, such as India and Sri Lanka. Pro tip: The resort provides a one-way complimentary airport pick-up. Chan informed me about the nearby tourist attractions, including the Royal Residence, Angkor National Museum, and Angkor Night Market. He also recommended exploring the riverside promenade and trying out the local restaurants and bars. Following his advice, I ended up spending most of my evenings strolling along the riverside and shopping at the night market.

Elegance in every detail

A dense canopy of tall trees surrounded the Borei Angkor Resort and Spa, creating an abode of peace far away from city life. The lovely manicured garden added to the tranquillity of the place.

Without a doubt, the reception area was one of the most striking aspects of the resort. It made me feel as if I had stepped inside a huge auditorium. The space was exquisitely decorated with polished wooden fixtures, ornate paintings, statues, and murals.

Spread over an area of around 1000 sq m, the lobby was divided into sections that served different purposes. One section of the reception featured an expansive seating area with long sofas. In another part, classical Khmer music was played by musicians on a large wooden xylophone, known as roneat ek in the local language. The ambience was a perfect amalgamation of tradition and modernity.

The highlight was a large brass bell housed under slanted wooden roofs, decorated with wooden fixtures and potted plants. Additionally, a gold fishpond with large-leaved plants and other motifs caught my attention. Among all these artefacts, I was surprised to see a large chunk of gold ore dating back to 12th century CE. "This is to honour the country's rich treasure of gold mines," explained the resort manager.

From earthy tones to exquisite woodwork

A majestic wooden staircase ascended from the lobby, leading to the upper level. As I made my way to the room, I couldn't resist admiring the beautiful colours complementing the wooden fixtures. Accentuated by golden ambient lighting, the browns, greens, and greys lent a distinctly earthy feel to the place.

When I entered my room, I was left awestruck by the interiors. The elegant wooden fixtures and accents added to the warm and cosy ambience. The room was equipped with all the amenities one could ask for, including WiFi, an in-room electronic safe, a rain shower, bathrobe and slippers, 24-hour in-room dining, and much more.

Each room in Borei Angkor Resort and Spa is designed with a terrace offering either a city, pool, or garden view. You can choose from four types of rooms—Deluxe, Landmark, Borei Suite, and Royal Suite. Note that room prices start from Rs. 4,000 and surge up to Rs. 8,000 during peak season. However, prices are subject to seasonal variations; be sure to check the resort's website for details.

Exploring the culinary offerings

As evening approached, I made my way to Bakan Restaurant, one of the dining venues at the resort. The option for al-fresco dining appealed to me, as I wished to savour my meal beneath the Cambodian sky. The menu was a fusion of Khmer and international cuisines, providing a wide variety of flavours to choose from. A special mention is due for the sandwiches and pastries crafted by the talented team at Borei Café, within the resort. One afternoon, I spontaneously decided to drop by the chic café for a coffee break. It proved to be a superb spot to indulge in flavourful coffee along with light bites.

Leisure and indulgence

One evening, while I was enjoying a drink by the poolside bar and conversing with the bartender, he proudly declared, "Our Tropicana Pool is the second-best among the 15 top-range swimming pools in Asia Pacific." Surrounded by palm trees, the swimming pool lies at the heart of the property. Indeed, it made for an idyllic setting for rejuvenating the senses.

That said, exploring the vast Angkor region is no small feat and can be quite demanding, especially under the relentless Cambodian sun. After a day's worth of exploring the ancient temples in the city, I decided to unwind at the resort's world-class spa. I tried the special J'Pong herbal steam therapy, which uses Cambodian herbs to relieve stress and improve blood circulation. It was probably one of the best spa experiences I have ever had.

Despite my usual disinterest in checking out hotel souvenir shops, I decided to make an exception with The Nirann, in Borei Angkor. Boasting the largest collection of Cambodian souvenirs in the country, it was crammed with exquisite handicrafts, traditional Khmer garments, accessories, splendid paintings, and intricate jewellery.

Beyond expectations

The hospitality of the people of Cambodia was among the high points of my stay at Borei Angkor Resort and Spa. Staff members were always eager to assist and ensure a comfortable stay. Extra toiletries were readily provided by the housekeeping staff whenever the need arose, and the resort manager graciously offered insights on shopping and dining. Opting for a stay at Borei Angkor Resort and Spa proved to be the perfect choice for my trip to Siem Reap. The resort's location, stunning architecture, Khmer hospitality, and delectable cuisine combined to create an experience of a lifetime. I look forward to returning to its embrace in the future.
