Varanasi, the spiritual capital of India, offers a range of modern stay options. However, a 'Bed & Breakfast' property has a special place in the hearts of travellers on-the-go.
What's a Bed & Breakfast accommodation? A 'Bed & Breakfast' type of accommodation is where guests pay for a room for the night and a healthy, homemade breakfast the following morning. It is a type of hosted-accommodation—typically run by families living in/nearby the same lodging property. Such stays help create an intimate, homely atmosphere where guests can experience the local culture and interact with their host and other guests. The experience is very similar to that of a homestay. A B&B generally offers day-to-day accommodation with only one complimentary meal daily, whereas homestays provide accommodation for longer durations.

Call it Varanasi, Kashi, or Banaras, this holy abode of Lord Shiva (locally worshipped as Kashi Vishwanath) goes by the epithet "The Spiritual Capital of India". The city attracts many pilgrims and tourists annually and to accommodate the needs of these tourists, a variety of hotels in Varanasi prepare in advance for the peak season. Hotels, guesthouses, dharamshalas (public resthouses/shelters devoted to religious or charitable purposes), high-end hotels and above all, many B&Bs have mushroomed around Varanasi, over the years. The ghats being the tourist mainstay in Varanasi, most accommodations are located in their vicinity. Popular areas to stay in Varanasi are centred around Dashashwamedh Ghat. Guesthouses and restaurants are also found along the Ganges River and in the surrounding narrow lanes. Most of the Bed and Breakfasts in Varanasi are not overpriced and are excellent choices for tourists. The wide range of options for accommodation starts at Rs. 350 for one night. The prices are subject to demand and can be higher during peak season, which is the period between November to February. During my recent trip to Varanasi, I explored the B&B options near the main ghats and nearby streets. I stayed at the Rose Heritage Home after carefully considering the price, amenities offered, and its location. To help you save time researching accommodation options, here is a list of a few such attractive B&Bs in Varanasi that I narrowed down.
This exotic 200-year-old B&B property, located at Shivala, just 650 metres from Harishchandra Ghat, was a convenient spot for my stay, since Dashashwamedh Ghat (where the world-famous Ganga Aarti takes place) was just a 20 minute leisurely walk along the river. I loved the ancient architecture of Rose Heritage Home, which is a renovated Bengali home. They have five categories of double rooms and suites, and the packages start from around Rs. 3,400, plus taxes. They serve continental breakfast and have air-conditioned rooms. This B&B is located in Ranamahal Ghat near Dashashwamedh Ghat, directly on the banks of the Ganges River. One has to leave their vehicle behind and walk for 10 minutes to reach the property. The rooms have air conditioning, and a few rooms also face the Ganges River. It also has a rooftop restaurant, where guests can enjoy a variety of Indian, Chinese and Western dishes. The double occupancy rooms start from Rs. 1,250, and the costlier rooms can go up to Rs. 10,000, plus taxes. Depending on the season, prices fluctuate. In Varanasi, Ganga Aarti begins everyday after sunset. Since I was here during the winter months, the Aarti was scheduled to begin at 6:45 pm. Wanting to have a closer look, I took an evening Aarti boat ride which cost me Rs. 550. Needless to say, I had to bargain hard to get this price. After the aarti, I wanted to try out the street food, like the famous Tamatar Chaat and Kachori Sabzi, and headed to Deena Chaat Bhandar, close to Dashashwamedh Ghat. This was followed by Dahi Chutney Gol Gappe, which is a sweet twist to the savoury Gol Gappe. Finally, I finished my dinner with the famous sweet of Varanasi, the Makhan Malaiyyo. With an enriched mind, full of spiritual fervour, and a stomach full of local delicacies, I knew I had experienced Varanasi perfectly.
