Behold the nocturnal heavens and capture that elusive shooting star at this unique property boasting captivating architecture and unspoiled natural splendour, all designed to elevate your vacation.
Nestled on the exquisite and secluded island of Koh Rong Samloem along Cambodia's southwestern shoreline, a lavish eco-retreat invites you to experience the "moon and the stars". Moonlight Resort, characterised by its unconventional dome-shaped accommodations and glass ceilings, stands as a truly unique presence on the island. The interplay of white and blue evokes Greek aesthetics, akin to the renowned Santorini Island. Among the numerous lodging choices on the island, Moonlight Resort holds a prominent position as one of the premier establishments.

There are two small villages and a hamlet on the island, with two tranquil spots on Lazy Beach and Sunset Beach on the western end. They can be reached by trekking through a dirt road. Moonlight Resort is situated on Saracen Bay—a 3 km long crescent-shaped stretch of powdery white sand and turquoise blue waters. The property is on the opposite end of the main pier.
I was picked up from the main pier by a small boat, and dropped right in front of the resort, located on the western, quieter end of the beach. The resort's beachfront is exquisite with its clear, shallow waters. I particularly loved the several dedicated shaded seating areas in front of the resort. Also, with quite a few restaurants at walking distance on either side of the property, I couldn't have asked for a better location.
The first thing I noticed while stepping onto the property were the dome-shaped rooms. The rooms are of two types—the Dome Rooms and the Semi-Dome Rooms—the latter is devoid of a glass ceiling. I was impressed by the large dome-shaped lobby—a huge enclosure with a blue-painted glass ceiling. Filtered sunlight filled the place with a beautiful blue tinge. There are two small aesthetically designed circular pools with comfortable square-shaped seating areas by them.
The Dome Room was unlike any I had stayed in. Sleeping under the round-shaped ceiling is a unique experience. Each dome room has a private terrace with sunchairs and tables, with views of the beach and the forest. Apart from the lovely proposition of sleeping 'under the stars', the rooms are tastefully designed with all the modern amenities. I loved the al fresco shower equipped with locally-made toiletries. Moreover, the convenience of 24-hour room service was just a bedside button away. However, the flat-screen TV is not of much use as there was no satellite connection here. Instead, the staff provided a hard drive with some select movies in it.
The Semi-Dome Rooms have almost all the amenities except for the beautiful see-through ceilings and terrace. Instead, the rooms have a small front porch that looks out towards the beach. They are also much smaller in size and are at the back end of the resort.
Despite the relatively higher cost of Dome Rooms, I would recommend opting for them for their beach-facing views. The experience they offer is undeniably special and worth the money.
The huge lobby doubles up as the restaurant. You can dine under the translucent blue coloured dome or opt for the outdoor seating area where you can feel the clear sand under your feet. The breakfast buffet is quite limited. Owing to the remoteness of the place, I didn't expect a lavish spread. However, the hospitality and service of the waiting staff was impeccable. The chef was more than happy to customise dishes and accommodate any requests.
The dinner menu is a combination of Mediterranean, Italian and Khmer cuisine. One of their signature dishes is Spaghetti Carbonara. It was one of the best I've ever had. I also loved the peculiar taste of the Green Mango Salad—a Cambodian speciality.
Even if you are not staying at Moonlight Resort, the Blue Moon restaurant is a must-try when in Koh Rong Samloem.
What I truly appreciated was the staff's unpretentious approach. They are readily available when required, and are proficient in English, French, and Khmer. The resort exudes a delightful ambience, accompanied by the perpetual symphony of ocean waves. Furthermore, it stands out as one of the rare resorts on the island that offer the convenience of online reservations. The property effortlessly checks off all the prerequisites for an idyllic beach holiday.
Koh Rong Samloem can be reached in around 45 minutes via regular ferries or long-tail boats from Sihanoukville, a coastal town in South Cambodia. There are also daily flights from Phnom Penn and Siem Reap to Sihanoukville. My recommendation is to book online so that there is no waiting time at the pier in Sihanoukville. Accommodation: The price for the Semi-Dome Rooms start from Rs. 7,500 during peak season (December to February), while the price for the Dome Rooms start from Rs. 11,500. Bear in mind that these tariffs are subject to change depending on the season and demand. Best Time to Visit: November to March Website: www.moon-light-resort.com
